The MIGHTY saw!
« on: March 25, 2007, 06:36:56 am »
Ok, so I used the saw the other day cos we were all having a saw war. I got owned. I like playing with the saw even though I suck at it. :-[ So I'm asking all you leetzor saw users out there to help me out:

Please give me everything you know about the chainsaw and how to use it in every situation. Thanks to everyone who contributes.  ;)

Move as fast as possible, and when you attack an enemy a typical maneuver is to lunge forward towards him/her while proning and jetting ('superman'). Start using the saw quite a bit before the impact though, since.. well, lag and movement prediction. And the saw is more about movement than anything else. You need to be quick and get close in on that enemy to be successful with it.

Also, a good thing to do with the saw, is when you hold it out. Make it so the saw is as far out as possible.  Even though it may only be a  few pixels, it's enough to kill them before they can touch you. Try to move in ways the enemies would not predict, as in. If you're going for the flag, then jump stright up or backflip for example. Even with what all Toumaz and I said, it's sometimes just luck.

The saw is more about positioning than speed, though that always helps. Basically, against other saw users, you want to be the first to strike before they do, and that is difficult with so little room to work with. From a standing/running position, it helps to aim at a 45 degree angle down towards the opponent's knees -- this guarantees a better chance of hitting them before they hit you. If the opponent crouches, then you should be looking to do a short prone dive, though this will put you at greater risk if you just do the action and don't account for aiming the saw at the exposed body.

Don't blindly think proning and jetting are the keys to success. They're not. You can have tremendous speed coming in, but as long as the enemy strikes you first, then all that speed is wasted. Speed essentially helps with saw priority and higher damage. Having the better position (both the character's positioning on the map and the saw's aim) will determine how you should attack, and sometimes it's best to either leave the enemy alone or move to a better place before advancing to put the odds in your favor.

For example, if someone is superman-ing at you with the saw, take a few steps forward and saw up to hit his stomach. Despite the speed advantage, you can easily put yourself in a better position to both evade the attack and get the kill. If the superman-ing enemy tries to halt, he'll still be at a disposition thanks to losing all that momentum and being stuck in the air hanging with little speed or jet to work with.

The Owls wrote a great guide to sawing I strongly recommend you read. You can check it out here:

There's a lot of good advice that'll significantly improve your chances, but the only real way to get better is to practice.

The best tip I can give you is to learn the range of the saw (it does not saw from the tip, but rather a short distance in front of the gostek) and just practice. You have to be a master of moving around in Soldat. It helps to learn what routes are best for sawing in each map and how to get around the map without being shot to pieces. Most people use the prone diving method assuming it will guarantee them a kill but thats a load of crap and it can easily be countered. Speed is your best friend. The faster you are, the faster you close the gap between you and a gun user. Though, m79 and nades are your worst enemies (avoid running along the ground too much, you will be invisi-naded repeatedly). It's extremely easy to blow a saw user to splattered guts with an m79 because the saw has to get close to make his kill, which makes aiming extremely easy for an m79 at close range.

You have to aim the saw as well. Don't forget to aim.

It is the tip. The saw is essentially a gun whose bullets fire and stop at the tip of the chainsaw. Each "bullet" or one ammo unit should do about 90-95% damage standing still on an equally motionless opponent. The range is "extended" by lag, that's all. Well, that may not be entirely accurate, as I haven't experimented enough to determine if the saw's "shots" have their distance increased by player speed as do other gun's shots.

I just messed around with the saw for a little, and there seems to be a box around the gostek. You can be a few pixels away from the enemy and still kill him.

The below image shows the maximum saw distance.

Yeah, I noticed that too when I was mucking around with bots.

It all accounts for the angle, how far your saw is placed out, and where you plan to hit the opponent.

As in Owls' guide, the superman dive and sawing the head is the best manuver. Although sometimes a bit difficult to pull off due to how you fly when proning, downward acceleration prior to upward. Hope this helps!
Miss your shots, miss your chance.

Love it when they fly past...I often find proning on the spot and pointing up works for me or aiming for their legs if they run as a lot of sawers don't tend to point far down enough to saw me and sudden "pronage" has caught many off guard in saw duels.
