Friendly Fire in the competitive scene.
« on: April 05, 2007, 02:47:51 pm »
Ok, here's the deal; why is friendly fire off during scrims, gathers and leagues? I haven't tried it but I think it would help reduce spray, teammates boosting eachother with autos/spas/m79, and will make the game more complex overall.

MWLC played a match vs. R7 with FF on, and the main reason is pretty simple: you end up killing your teammates for laughs rather than trying to win.  [retard]

The other reason is this:

make the game more complex overall.
More complexity isn't necessarily a good thing, and I think that's applicable in this case. I'd rather not have to think "Ok, am I about to hit a teammate if I spray\shoot this LAW\throw this knife\throw this nade\etc. etc." as that would just make playing the game annoying rather than fun. If you want complex, you can always play R\S.

I never played a clanwar with FF turned on, however I did ask for it once.
After some discussion we all agreed that having FF turned on would just take away the fast-paced gameplay which characterizes Soldat. After a few minutes of gameplay with FF on, to test it, it was pretty obvious that - against all expectations - having FF turned on took away alot of tactics and complexity simply because people don't rush anymore and scores in a ctf match are pretty rare.

Maybe it's a good idea for clans who are pretty even, because then an accidentally made teamkill could cause a score for the other team.

FF off is another kid rule which makes it less likely to fuck up, and you have to keep less factors and fears inside your head.

I believe FF on just adds that reality to the game.  I like it personally and think it should be on all the time.

Friendly Fire is an advanced tactic, as I see it.

Most servers don't have FF activated because of the pressure you have, being able to oust your own teammates by accident or by choice. I personally think most servers would provide a bit more of a challenge if FF was on. Although I have mixed opinions on it, as I'm not always the best shot and sometimes I can see when my bullets hit teammates and I think, "That could've been lethal. If FF was on."
Miss your shots, miss your chance.

I guess leaving FF off is just the way clan wars are fought. They're mostly fought with fast-paced action and quick-thinking. Having to worry about whether or not your spray or thrown nades might take out a couple of your teammates would be quite a heavy burden to carry.

I once posed as a member of a clan and participated in a clanwar in a server with FF on. Throughout the entire game, I "accidentally" TKed various people on my team, and when it was time for my team's final humiliating defeat, I destroyed my entire team and began to spam "OWNED FAGS" until I was banned. The clan member I impersonated was furiously ousted from the clan and suffered punishment from the clan whenever possible (I used his name once more and was TKed relentlessly by another member of the clan.) until all was explained and IPs were checked. Good times.

So yeah, I'm in favor of FF in clanwars.

Pretty wrong place to ask this :P FF had already pretty much discussion at EU -scene. It was enabled on 4th gather server, and it was suggested for TNL http://forums.tnl.org.uk/viewtopic.php?t=2063 <- I guess you can read everyones opinion in it, sums everything up. Sure it's a league, but every clan war (atleast in EU -scene) runs with league (TNL and SCTFL) rules, and they're pretty similiar.

People don't like FF because people like boosting.

It adds to the realism but in a fast little round with your friends and not a clan war/planned tournament, you probably don't wanna concentrate if your fire-line is clean from teammates.
So I think FF is best, when combined with R or R/S.

FF is fun! It prevents the other team from boosting their FFC..

...So I think FF is best, when combined with R or R/S.

Hmm.. Hard to say. Remember that most players are incapable of actually controlling their fire, therefor making FF unwished for in most servers. This is not so much a problem in the normalmode scene, but in realistic where you only have so much health, it can be a real pain when your good-for-nothing teammates kill you with random spray etc.
Now, I can definitely see the potential of enabling FF in CW's and scrims, but only if both teams are 'good enough' to deal with it. Otherwise it's just gonna ruin the whole deal.

Also, being a realistic enthusiast, I'd say every aspect of soldat is best combined with either R or R/S :) But I think FF could be just as good with normalmode.

Why not stick it on one of your gather server's Marr, they had it on the euro one for a while and i liked it there.

I like it. It forces you to work more as a team. You can spray all you like, just tell your team when you are doing in. When traveling in twos, one has to take high and on has to stay low to avoid TEEKAAYYYY. It slows you down and makes you aware of your allies. It takes off the ramboists who like the bull through a fire fight, hitting whoever they damn well please. It forces you to be more accurate as well. I remember picking up the Steynr AUG for the first time on realistic and couldn't handle the bink and was killing everyone on my team. I had to go get better.

It's also a source of lulz.

I would go even further, by saying that realistic mode should be turned on on gathers.

I believe there is a realistic gather, not entirely sure though.
Realistic is really a different gametype altogether, and I for one can't stand it. There should be a realistic gather made especially for that, and not have realistic forced upon those who like regular.
