I think what soldat really needs is a lobby for people to chat in
               what do you guys think?

I know what you meant, but IRC will suffice enough.

Wow, what a low way to disregard of a suggestion. It's common knowledge in the Soldat community that IRC exists. Go be mean elsewhere :P

We could be proactive and integrate an existing messenger protocol into the game client. The Gaim library has already been used for such things. It's a matter of figuring out the interface, and of course time and agreement on MM's part.

I figure that the user could interact with the interface by pressing the Esc key. Here he could join chat rooms or start up IM conversations. When he returned to the game, the IM conversations would become transparent. The transparent chat window visibility could be toggled via a function key.

Well aware of how impossible this sounds... so don't be going "that's never gonna happen"

It sounds cool, but with msn and irc being used by just about everyone who has internet, I just don't think anybody would use. Plus, if it's a public, most people just chat in the game.

On the other hand, a lot of people might reply and say this'd be good.

My point is that nothing is impossible.

By the way, IRC is not as commonly used as you might think. It's not even installed on most machines. Messenger is installed on nearly every modern computer.

Can't say the developers chose the best names. At least folks won't get the popular IM client confused with the noun "game" anymore.

Some retarded people could just post links to hacks there, so there should be moderators 24/7, and that's impossible. IMO there are no need for a thing like that anyway. If you wanna chat, go to IRC, Msn, or some chatsite or what ever.

Yes, but for example in IRC, there are moderators on every channel, and they will ban them. Though IRC might be the reason, why every new polish or czech clan uses hacks ;l

That is just like re-inventing the wheel. Why code a whole new lobby server, since you can talk at IRC?

Which one is easier to do?
- Code a new lobby server
- or tell people to use IRC ?

Which one is easier to moderate?
- Lobby server chat, where someone (that's already one problem -> who?) moderates lobby 24/7
- or IRC where lots of channel operators moderates every channel, where they usually have atleast one online most of the time?

If the lobby doesn't have any channels, then there would be
- people talking different languages
- people talking about different subjects

It may require more effort. But I say a lobby will be very useful. Support.

one posibility is to intigrate a IRC client into soldat lobby and have it join a chan #soldat.lobby or something on Qnet (as Qnet is where most soldateers hang out)

How hard it is to integrate it into the Interface I have no clue to, but I doubt it can be that hard...
And coding a basic one chan IRC client isnt hard :)

Just a thought.

Qnet might not like it.. And putting hundreds of players in same channel isn't a good idea imo:
- people talking different languages
- people talking about different subjects

QNet doesn't have a choice. They can't block a particular client... and this wouldn't be the first time that a game has been integrated with IRC.

It's fairly common for lobbies to be based on location. Soldat could either automatically select the player's lobby based on the country determined from the IP address, or ask the player which lobby he/she would like to join. That, combined with the fact that users can create their own channels for particular subjects, solves all of those issues.

no bassically all you need is at first channels for different languages then if everyone likes it you should make a ablity for people to create a channel besides mIRC is not free and some people playing soldat don't even know what IRC is..
