RIP Windows XP 2001-2007

If you're not a fan of Microsoft's latest operating system, Windows Vista, you've no doubt already noticed the near-total absence of systems that are still offered with Windows XP. While change is a natural part of the computing industry, so is resistance to the unknown. However, as the saying goes, "Resistance is futile."

Microsoft will soon prohibit OEM manufacturers from selling Windows machines carrying anything other than Vista preloaded. "The OEM version of XP Professional goes next January," said Frank Luburic, senior ThinkPad product manager for Lenovo. "At that point, they'll have no choice."

Despite the promotions and hype surrounding Vista, many consumers are still looking for ways to get new systems loaded with the more familiar XP operating system. Some are turning to the "Small Business" sections of their favourite retailer, but even those will not be a safe haven in 2008. Dell has already reaffirmed to business users that it plans to "continue offering Windows XP on select Dimension and Inspiron systems until later this summer."

However, home users are still being left out in the cold. Users wanting to stick with XP for comfort or compatibility reasons will need to pay the extra money for a retail (or third-party OEM) copy of Windows XP, and those will surely get harder to find as the year continues

Microsoft to require all Windows preloads to be Vista only in 2008

Yup, I read this somewhere.
I think it's pretty stupid of Microsoft to discontinue OEM versions of XP this soon.
They should have at least waited until after more Vista bugs get fixed or more Vista service packs come out.

Oh yeah man. Thats another thing I hate about Blista, ahem cough, Vista. It has no support for 16 bit programs (dos).
That is why I am staying with Windows 2K & DosBox (dos emulator).

I'm sure Windows XP will dominate home computers quite awhile. Do they think that people buy Windows for use at a computer at their home? Oh they're so stupid...

I'm gonna stick with Win XP until I have no other choice. My mom wanted to buy a laptop and i told her that it might be smart to choose vista...was i wrong or what. All those annoying popups and warnings make one mad and the fact that most of my old games don't even run on that shit. Not only that, it requires more from your system that XP

OBEY!!!

too bad I have no problems with windows XP. thanks for the shameless Ubuntu plugin anyway.

I haven't had a crash since i got 98 and now that I have been using XP (which I like because the name looks like your face when windows crashes) I have rarely ever had a problem with XP.

I think some people don't know how to use their windows computer, you are not supposed to mess with the crap they give you, its stable until you do something stupid like try to go to google with internet explorer .9 beta version, get firefox or opera and stop bitching that windows is evil.

And don't tell me Mac is a solution, that is just a video card with an image editing program strapped on to it, no viruses because nobody targets a mac because you can't use a mac for anything exept media editing.

And don't tell me ubuntu is a solution either, yeah, i saw the list of games that worked for wine, if i had wine the first thing i would do would be whine. The list of games is about as long as my adverage post.

XP isn't dead as long as vista still sucks, sure XP isn't perfect, but it beats the hell out of operating systems that have such huge limits on everything Gaming, which is the biggest reason people upgrade their computers. If I didn't have any games my computer would just be a typewritter with a videocard.

the answers to all of your problems.
That won't run Soldat on my laptop. Also, it's a newbie distro. I could install it on the second try.
BTW, the latest Mac OSs are based on a version of BSD, which is based on Unix. So basically it's Unix.

I like Windows XP. Sure, it might not be as cool as an open-source OS, but it's only crashed on me a few times. All problems with it are purely from my computer which has 256 MB of RAM.
And I don't think I can even run Vista's Notepad with that much RAM.

Windows XP has crashed on me one time since its release, and a quick reboot fixed that. I really can't see the reason for all the fanboy hate here.

I don't hate XP. I hate M$'s movemens so far. First announcing that they will stop supporting xp with updates soon, now they say they are stopping selling it alltogether.

I don't see why vista is so hot anyway. You can do almost everything vista does on xp with WindowsBlinds and DesktopX.
