Linux
« on: April 17, 2007, 08:23:18 pm »
Yeah, i want Linux. After seeing the videos of Ubuntu with XGL and Beryl, i almost came on my keyboard.

So i guess what i wanna know is... Is it hard/risky to install Linux? And what can i run on Linux? Does it support all games and other such programs?

I've got plenty of harddrive space (80gb) and my video card (ATI Mobility Radeon X1600) should support it all fine.

Get this tomorrow. Install it. This is the latest and awated release of Ubuntu that comes out tomorrow.
http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu704

then to get Beryl, (the thing that makes the cubes and other sexiness) follow these instructions:

http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Install_Beryl_on_Ubuntu#Ubuntu_7.04_.28Feisty_Fawn.29

NOTE: do all of this tomorrow, when the latest release of Ubuntu out. As of right now, that version of Ubuntu is in Beta stage. Which means, not that stable.

Only if you're lucky enough to have it run with WINE. I've gotten Soldat to "work" but it's hardly playable. You might have more luck with more mainstream games, however.

And let's just call it "enlightening" rather than "fanboyism." If you disagree, I'll enlighten you from here to Subway's. Oh yeah, you can "eat fresh" all you want.

don't forget, that a lot of games like FPS's and others are made for linux. Like RTCW Enemy Territory, and other ID games.

You can always run both linux and windows on the same computer (what I do) and just use windows for everything that doesn't work on linux.

Its called Grub.

If you only have one HD, linux will give you the option to resize your Windows partition to make room for the linux ones and install the boot loader, Grub.

You probably pushed the button in the motherboard setup that starts when your computer starts and flashes by then usually loads windows.

You selected it's boot-to-which-drive option and selected the one with Linux on it, most likely.

To answer a few of your questions....

What runs on Linux?
Well....Soldat sorta runs well with ubuntu, but its really hard to install most other programs (especially if your a linux noob...)

If your comfortable with Windows....stick to that, but if you want to try something free  and fast, go for Ubuntu. Flies would tell you the same thing.

As I've said before, Ubuntu is a newbie Linux distro, i.e., you can install it on the first try, you may never need to compile software since it's Debian-based, most codecs are easy to get, etc. It's Linux for non-hackers.
Ubuntu has crashed on me several times, but I haven't tried it on a decent system. Probably my laptop's fault. But when it does run, it's as good or better than Windows XP, minus the native compatibility for DirectX.
Also, I hear from my OSS-using friend that KDE is better than Gnome, which Ubuntu uses. So I'd suggest at least taking a look at Kubuntu. They're almost exactly the same, the only difference is in the GUI.

Anyone know a good tutorial of using the terminal, because I need to install ndiswrapper to install a linksys driver, but I'm thrown into something I know nothing about. I can't even install ndiswrapper.

I'm a complete idiot, but here is the problem. I don't know how to change directories in terminal. I've been searching through the internet (on windows) and just through the help file on ubuntu.

Smegma: http://www.ss64.com/bash/

Installing beryl (the cube+shiney-foo stuff) on 7.04 is very easy, the link that someone gave up there should sum it all up.

If you're thinking about playing with Ubuntu, definitely make sure to get 7.04, not something earlier.  There are a lot of changes in this most recent version that make things much easier.

I'm having troubles with Fiesty recognizing my USB network adapter. The ndiswrapper installed with the driver and recognizes the adapter, but then its NOT recognized.

Is it just a rare case that I've been fucked over and any easy way to fix besides laying down money for a wireless pci card (which I hear has less troubles)?

Well, on my pc, Feisty works perfectlly with my internal D-Link PCI wireless card, but doesn't work at all with my laptop's Motorola PCMCIA wireless card.

haven't tried USB ones yet with Feisty.

But is it an over all linux downfall (or just my mistake), or just a distro one. I know little about all this, I'm just trying to find a cheaper method of getting connected on linux.
