Homework Help
« on: April 19, 2007, 09:59:13 pm »
Post math problems, language problems, and other such school-related paper-work problems here. I'm not sure if there's a bunch of guys here that haven't dropped out besides Rambo_6, VitchiDoodah, and other moderators, but I'm posting it here anyway since Rambo_6's Physics help inspired me. On the other hand, if too many people here are drop-outs, then let this thread die slooooowlyyyyy............

savvy?

I'm going to sticky this for a bit.  We'll see how well it goes from there.

For anyone answering questions: please don't just solve the problem and move on.  Make an attempt to give hints, explain the process you used to solve the problem, and generally teach rather than just giving people fish.

x=45?....

EDIT: I'm assuming that drawn line is actually a right angle....

Taken that the "x" is the angle betwen the black line and the one you drew, and that the lines across the lines you drew represent that the lines are the same length.

as they are the same its n/n = 1
using tan-1(1) you get that the angle _\ is 45deg.
seeing there beeing 90deg from the the thick black _ to the other thick black |, the x has to be
x = 90 - 45
x = 45

Its not a sure way to check if you are right, but you do know the answer isnt bound to be wrong.
Seeing that the angle is 45 between the _ and the line you drew \ and the two / \ are the same length, means that the angle /_ is in fact also 45deg, thus making the sum of the triangle 2*(45) + 45 + 45 = 180deg, and thats correct.

You should allways try to check your answers :)

A lahar happens in one of two ways:

1) Volcanic activity - A pyroclastic event (lots of superheated gas and ash) is ejected from the volcano and melts snow/glacial ice.  This melting produces vast amounts of water very quickly, which then begins to drag along ash and volcanic material (as well as anything else in its path, plant debris, rocks, etc.) as it moves down the volcano.  Sometimes this lahar can be heated by the volcanic activity, and can sometimes be associated with pyroclastic flows (superheated ash/gas clouds which "flow" over the surface).  Lahars usually escape through river valleys and down other types of channels, creating a huge problem for people living near volcanoes.

2) Sudden flooding can do the same thing, but minus the heat and volcanism.  Ash deposits from previous volcanic activity may be around to be washed into the mix.

Basically the lahar is sort of like moving concrete or a thick paste, due to all the ash and other suspended debris, but when they stop moving the water begins to filter out and leaves massive mud/ash deposits.

A good article you can site which summarizes the majority of what I just said.

I have a geometry question:

"You have a regular n-gon and an isoscoles triangle.
The angle measure for the point of the triange is 34 degrees.
Each angle measure of the n-gon is 1/10 the angle measure of one of the base angle of the triangle.

How many sides does the n-gon have?"

Ermm... help?

if i is telling pi to get rational, meaning i is telling pi to get logical, logical doesn't have to be real. It just has to make sense. If pi tells i to get real, then he means get REAL, as in be real. not fake. Support Pi.

I passed up your question because I didn't understand what you were describing.  Is this what you're talking about:

Then (using my previous picture):

Since the sum of a triangle's angles must equal 180, 180 = x + y + z = 34 + 2y.  Thus y = z = 73.

Theta = y/10 = 7.3.

Since any polygon's internal angles must sum to 360 degrees, the number of sides (or triangles) that make up the shape must be 360/Theta = 360/7.3 = 49.3.

Of course, any n-gon must have some whole number of sides, so the answer doesn't make any sense.

Hmm... I might have copied it down wrong.
Or it might just be a trick question.
I dunno.

I might be able to answer questions about Biology, Zoology, Botany, or Statistics if you have any.  Almost everything on the subjects can be found online though, so I doubt you will need my help :(
