Ubuntu is Linux for newbies (or "human beings", depending if you buy into their marketing or not). If you know how to install a sexier distro, nobody's stopping you.
Tou know, you can change the colors of the GUI from brown to something else. It's not like it's hard or anything, I've done it like 5 times.
Names mean crap.
Back up why it's "pathetic". To me, it's a very easy to use and run Debian-based distro. I haven't had any limitations with the time I've been using it, other than Soldat won't run on it. More of a problem with the computer than with Ubuntu.
If you don't like GNOME, you can get Kubuntu, all of Ubuntu's newbie-friendly features with KDE's attractive interface.

in Ubuntu, it is entirely possible for you to never need to touch the command line.  But if you take the time to learn your way around the command line, it can only be a good thing for you.

Err, I tried Ubuntu the other night and didn't open the command line once. Seriously, Linux is not as hard to install as it's made out to be (especially Ubuntu)
