I know you're probably thinking "But that's the way it's already set up...", but I had something different in mind.

A user's karma should only be editable after they've past 25 posts.  Or 10 posts, since that seems more reasonable.

This would give new forumers a small buffer of time to protect them from that immediate onslaught of smites that almost all new users experience.  Since it's often just because of a simple question or initial rule-breaking, they could benefit from a little leeway when they first join.

I can not smite or exalt people yet... That sounds like a good idea.
Although I have been playing soldat for months...

This is a pretty good idea. I think it should be 25.

It wouldn't make any difference.

Yeah, I can imagine a guy sitting at his computer refreshing someone's profile thinking "One more post and i can smite this bitch!" [/sarcasm]

I completely support this idea.
I don't think karma is important but to those who think it is, this addition will surely do good. It's very rare to find someone with less than 25 posts and a positive karma.
I've also thought of putting the smite and applaud links in the profile rather than next to every post. This way karma means alot more than it does now, you have to open someone's profile before you can smite or applaud him/her.

Yes, then we wouldn't have the onslaught of "why my karma so low" threads.
Support.

Yeah, really support this thread, it gives the newcomers the chance to decide what kind of member they want to be, rather than letting low karma decide for them to be spammers / assholes / whiners.

I've also thought of putting the smite and applaud links in the profile rather than next to every post.

Support that too ^

I don't, but idiots who just joined the forums do. I want this feature added to stop them from whining.

Very good idea. This should definately be implemented.

What about a combination of all three suggestions, they all seem reasonable to me:

  • The karma modifier must have x number of posts, and so should the reciever.
  • The number of posts required to edit/have edited karma is 25.
  • The links to smite and applaud are found in a members profile.

I can't applaud or smite yet, but I think the 25 post before editting karma is a good idea. Otherwise people may join and go smiting all they want. I also agree with the karma in profile setting.

No no no. The current system is good as it is. Allowing ppl to applaud/smite with post increases just encourages more spam in the topics.

You don't seem to get it.  This is concerning having the newbies with barely any posts be "immune" to karma change for a period of time.  Most new forumers get kinda freaked out by the whole Karma system, so this gives them a bit of time to get used to it.

A good idea, should be implemented.
To sum up my point: We had a multipage debate about toilet padding. (Putting TP in the water so you don't get splashed.)
And we still don't know if dead guys can keep a stiffy.
