would you use a torrent?
« on: April 22, 2007, 01:11:55 am »
Update:

I just spoke to MM.  1.4 will be released 30 minutes earlier than planned via torrent.  The normal direct links will all show up at the planned time.

Please read what I said carefully.  1.4 is being released early to people willing to use the torrent.  The official download mirrors with direct downloads will be made available at the time that is planned for release.

The reason I point that out is so that people don't complain "it isn't fair to make the direct links show up 30 minutes late" because they won't.  The direct links will be on-time and the torrent link will be up early.

I mention this so you can install a torrent client if you're planning to get it early ;)

Clients:
uTorrent: http://www.utorrent.com/
azureus: http://azureus.sourceforge.net/

many others: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_client

If Soldat 1.4 was being distributed via torrent, would you use the torrent?  I'm looking for honest numbers so that I can gauge the usefulness of setting up a torrent for the 1.4 release, when that day comes.

Here are some reasons to use a torrent:
  • It is much nicer to the people who host download mirrors for Soldat, especially at release times
  • You will likely get faster download speeds from a torrent than from peoples' mirrors, just because there are so many people downloading
  • Using a Soldat torrent would help put Soldat on lists of popular torrents on the sites it is listed on, thus giving Soldat free advertising
  • Torrents are overall a very good way of distributing files to large numbers of people.

Again, please answer this honestly.  If enough people say that they would use it, I'll put up a torrent when 1.4 is released.

I would, but more for the sake of seeding, because normally I'd pick a direct link over a torrent, unless the download is over around 50MB.

I think using torrent to download a 12MB file is counter-productive.

I understand that it may seem overkill, and I agree that normally a torrent for a 12MB file would definitely be overkill.. but when everyone around the world who plays Soldat is trying to upgrade to 1.4 within 24-36 hours of the release, a torrent would definitely help... a lot.

This poll is to find out what people would do during release times, not normal "I need to redownload Soldat" times.

I wouldn't use a torrent for such a small file if I had a choice, but if I had to I wouldn't mind really.

I'd still keep a direct link on the site though. Wouldn't want to alienate anybody who wants to try Soldat but has no clue what a torrent is.

Edit: 400th post. This calls for celebration.

Nah.

I would download it using a directly link first, but I'd be willing to use a torrent to help distribute it.

I would rather use a direct link considering the small file size, but I really wouldn't mind if it was a torrent.

Well, I prefer a direct download.
Direct downloads usually give me higher speeds than torrents. Also, my connection is only 3.4mbit down and 256kbit up (Belgium has the most expensive internet in the world, I think, even more expensive than South-Africa) so most of the direct links can handle the 3.4mbit upload speed.

However, if you decide to launch a torrent let me know and I'll permanently seed it.

If I had to download the whole file, Yes. If I only needed to download a 1.3.1>1.4 patch, then no.

Well I would surely use it especially now because the download speeds would be around 30 kbps or even less when everybody starts downloading. And what you said about those torrent sites, I think it would greatly benefit the soldat community and Michal himself (more registrations). I think that open office also has a torrent download, aswell as some other popular freeware programs and games.

EDIT: I think I won't be downloading the patch if there will be any cause I've seen people have problems with the patches before...

I would prefer a direct download (I'm sure everyone would) but have no problem with torrent either.
