I've never used a torrent... what do they do? :D

It's basically a peer to peer protocol that is heavily based on the belief that everybody shares the file they are downloading with others, even as they are downloading it; which doesn't put that much pressure onto the actual starting server.

Wikipedia's article on BitTorrent can probably tell you more. :)

I'd use the torrent cause I like to seed, and the more seeds mean the more possibility someone will stumble apon it. More players to own. I like to be considerate and seed torrents as well.

If new SOLDAT will be distributed by torrent I will SEED it,
but imo better for torrent will be a pack soldat (soldat 1.4 + mapmaker , polyworks , interface maker, soldat admin, soldat dedicate server etc.)

Yeah, torrents are good. I rarely use them, but still it's comfortable way to share files. Though I would directly download Soldat from Download.com or any other web site.

I would just use the direct link, but if using torrent helps Soldat-community even little, of course I use torrent.

It depends, if it's a big file size, I'll go for the torrent. If it's less than, let's say, 50 meg, I'd just use the direct link.

I've never used a torrent...
same here
So: No

lol ye should look into it...
It all depends how big the file is - if it's a measly small 12MB download then a Direct Link is the first choice...  so I think you should've stated how big the d.l is.
Can't think of anything original to put here...

Seeing it beeing a rather small file, I would most likely use the direct link unless it was requested on the download page that torrents would be used due to the heavy load during release times.

I would seed the torrent as best I could tho since its soldat :)

I strongly prefer direct downloads.

The problem is, Torrent is slow as hell... :|
And direct links are ALWAYS better, imo.

Maybe if every single mirror was completely maxed out and The torrent was my only option...

Then I would wait a few hours.
The file is so small even if a million people wanted to download soldat at the same time (which is doubtful even without factoring in timezones/when news gets around) they would all be done in a few hours. I have never firsthand seen a torent go above 25kbps, that being said I have only done a few torrents.

I think I won't be doing too much damage to our community by not getting some free advertizing by a bunch of movie pirates.

'eh...there's really no difference in my opinion.  Torrents are better anyway, especially if it would be for the release.  Instead of looking around between different mirrors for the direct download, you just click the torrent and bam..away it goes.  If you have a good torrent program that is..
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams it is
still a beautiful world.  Strive to be happy.

Perhaps when it is first released, provide the torrent link at the top of the downloads page, with a message urging you to use the torrent for the first couple days to a week after 1.4 is released, as not to kill the servers hosting Soldat.

I got Azureus. It's a very good program but it's pretty advanced, so not something for someone who will be using Torrents for the first time.
Both direct links and torrents can max out my connection (425KB/sec downstream) but direct link will go to the maximum immediately while the torrent must contact the tracker and seeders first.

I really think it's a good idea to put Soldat online as a torrent, but I think that'll only be handy for making it more famous rather than supporting the direct link mirrors.

It'd sure be easier to use a direct link, but if I could save others' precious bandwidth by taking an extra minute to torrent it, I'd do it.

If my FTP wouldn't cut the connection, if I'm uploading s.th. I would host it.
I use Filezilla, can anyone tell me how to get a more stabilized connection?

I would, but only because of the initial traffic loaded on a mirror by the sudden release. Normally I'll use a mirror every time.
