Alky Project to Allow DirectX 10 Programs Out of Vista
« on: April 26, 2007, 01:49:55 pm »
I wasn't entirely sure where to put this, but since this could be the start of Soldat being ported to other operating systems, I figured here would be the best place.

Anyway, Falling Leaf Systems recently released an alpha of a program which can take in a DirectX 10 executable and modify it for use on an operating system other than Vista. While this may not seem like the most exciting thing, remember Soldat uses DirectX. This makes porting Soldat seem somewhat more viable, all it has to do is be changed to support DirectX 10, and if this project succeeds, Soldat will be available on all x86 systems.
The catch is, I don't know if Delphi supports DirectX 10. But I think it may be possible.
Any programmers experienced in Delphi who can enlighten me on this?

I can't understand what are you talking about, but can anyone answer me on this simple question, Will Soldat works on Windows Vista? If this question asked xtishereb than sorry. He's talking about too difficult thing that I don't understand :>

It sounds illegal, I'm sure MS will be suing these guys very shortly and you'll never hear of the project again

Soldat will "work" on Vista but it in reality has many problems.  Search the "Need Help? Report Bugs!" forum for the word "Vista" and you'll see what I'm talking about

Ah, well, who cares about that?
I'll download it BEFORE they get their pants sued off, and distribute it amongst you guys, just for Soldat. Or I could just find some torrent somewhere for it after they get sued.
I'd love to use Soldat on my Mac.....It'd be so awesome...
Don't say that you're Magic. Because you aren't, and I am.
All-around good with weapons that aren't long range, except in TW.
Now be careful out there, soldier.

Soldat doesn't need directX10, it only needs 8.1... so we have no desire for it.

If they don't get sued, then Soldat on Linux might finally be possible. But, if Michal was to change Direct X minimum to 10, then all those low end computer users will dissapear....:(
Just another soul to burn.

Michal has on reason to do that and I don't think he would punish us like that.

You have to realize, that changing to a higher version of directx is no simple task; the API completely changes, and every single reference to directx needs to be changed. It's a rather large task.

As for the legality, I'm leaning towards the project itself will be legal; what it aims to do is emulate the functionality of DirectX10 (much like how WINE currently emulates DirectX, and will probably emulate DirectX10 as well), except what it aims to do is instead of translating calls at runtime, it will pre-translate them into a new executable that will be able to run on linux natively; no small goal if you ask the WINE people. However, I myself don't see the project getting very far.
