GTS - Generic Teen Syndrome?
« on: April 30, 2007, 11:46:31 am »
Before proceeding, take notice that I am only halfway through my sixteenth year of existence, making me fifteen years old.

In years past, I have been a bright and happy child, known to talk to my family a lot, and I was rather faithful to my small handful of nerdy peers, all male of course. I took life as it came, and liked to stay in my tiny bubble of a life, with little concern for anything outside of grades, or my latest architectural creation in UnrealEd. I hated myspace, because it's scripts were buggy and some concepts were half-assed. I didn't really care for girls, as at the time, I figured that if I didn't take interest until college, I wouldn't have to deal with pointless relationships. Wasn't that intelligent of me.

In this school year, Photography class has made me think a bit more of the world outside of computers and school. I started to care about my image, and my grades started to decline. I started to go into Woodstock weekly, so I began to hang out with the hippie emo stoner kids. Add a girlfriend into the mix, and you have a kid who usually doesn't call to be taken home any earlier than eleven at night, sometimes as late at twelve thirty in the morning. At home, I talk very little, if at all, and I'm often seen doing nothing but staring at the floor for hours. I think about the world too much, and write rather dismal paragraphs on the outlook of the world, and the "work-sleep cycle"-esque people who inhabit it. My favorite short film is A Black and White Cartoon About Roof Tiling, which I'm certain would scare my parents into sending me to a mental institution.

So what's gotten into me? Does this happen to everyone at this age? Am I just a weird emo kid?

It's normal stuff. Take less drugs and make as much noise as you want while touching yourself. It'll all be over soon.

My grades have started to decline when I was 14. Since then it's all about girls, porn, and now alchohol. I don't smoke anything so I'm good for now...

But girls girls girls and a lot of ranting about the meaning of life and suicidal thoughts.
And ffs I don't wanna be emo

Sometimes people change, I have changed drastically from when I was 15. The more you find in life the more it affects who you are. If you want to be emo, be emo! Course I will make fun of you to no end, but its still your life. I would just say never turn your back on your friends, however long you have been friends; month, year, lifetime.... it still hurts to have someone leave you behind.

I'm only less childish since beginning high school. Now that I am 15 I still care deeply about my grades. I am never going to take that photography class.

In this school year, Photography class has made me think a bit more of the world outside of computers and school. I started to care about my image, and my grades started to decline.

Thinking about the world != bad grades.  Are you sure there are no other factors?

I started to go into Woodstock weekly, so I began to hang out with the hippie emo stoner kids. Add a girlfriend into the mix, and you have a kid who usually doesn't call to be taken home any earlier than eleven at night, sometimes as late at twelve thirty in the morning. At home, I talk very little, if at all, and I'm often seen doing nothing but staring at the floor for hours. I think about the world too much, and write rather dismal paragraphs on the outlook of the world, and the "work-sleep cycle"-esque people who inhabit it.

You don't think about the world too much; you dwell on the negative too much.  Think about world history.  Think about great accomplishments and amazing cultures.  Think about all the wildlife that's around.  Think about the possibilities that still lie before us.  THAT'S thinking about the world.  "My life and my friends' lives are boring and dismal" is not.

My favorite short film is A Black and White Cartoon About Roof Tiling, which I'm certain would scare my parents into sending me to a mental institution.

Yeah, don't watch that.  It's only going to make things worse.  Let's say I watch a video of Walter Payton.  Every time I see it, even if it's the same video, I think more and more how he's a great football player (note that this is far from an obsession; I'm just using it as an example).  Every time I watch "The Great Escape," I am more impressed by the ingenuity of the POWs.  The same thing is likely to happen with your film.  Every time you see it, your mind will be more set that the world is a dark place.  That's not a healthy outlook on life, and it's a bad idea to reinforce it.

So what's gotten into me? Does this happen to everyone at this age? Am I just a weird emo kid?

It definitely does not happen to everyone.  If you hang out with the emo kids, you're going to become one.  That's how relationships work.  Do something fun.  Do something that matters.  Go on a bike ride.  Go camping.  Build something.  Watch a comedy.  Help out at a homeless shelter.  Not only will you be encouraging others, but you'll find out that your life isn't that bad.  You could also play a sport.  And don't tell me "But I'm terrible at sports.  I'll do badly and I'll feel worse."  BS.  My sophomore year, when I was fifteen (like you), I joined wrestling.  I had no experience at all, and I lost most of my matches.  But you know what? Wrestling gave me an incentive to better myself.  Not only did I improve my strength and fitness, but I was also able to hang out with a cool group of guys.  So try something.  Get involved.  Hang out with people other than the "hippie emo stoner kids."  If you don't want to be like them, change.  It takes some effort, sure, but the reward more then makes up for it.

One more thing: Don't listen to depressing music.  Listen to inspiring music.  For example, the music played at the beginning of this clip is pretty good: http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/knockouts/video/xh3yr_prides-deadliest-knockouts

Find music like that.  Sad and depressing music will only make you feel worse.

That's totally normal. My grades have always been "average"......I've lived for 15 years and I'm taking photography next year so I can slack off [retard]

Also, on the subject of girls, friends, drugs....all normal.

Bummer.  So my happy, girlfriendless, drug-free life was abnormal.

I didn't really care about much else. Then I got involved in a relationship with a female (omg) and now things are a lot different. So, I'm guessing that it happens to everybody.

EDIT: Although, judging by that video, there may be, err, different levels of the syndrome?

Sounds weird, sure, but at least I'm saving money. =)

Ah, who knows.  Never had a girlfriend (mainly due to lack of effort), so I can't really compare my current state to that.

I think the closest I've ever gotten to this would be when I got into Linkin Park a few years ago, before they teamed up with Jay-Z for some reason. I preferred the less emo songs though. The ones that were in tune. Then I got into Drum 'n' Bass and I've never been the same.
Don't worry. Think about who you are, what you want to do, and then act accordingly. Don't worry if you'll become generic. I think you're a very unique person. I mean, you've got great pixel art skills. How many people here can say that?

I think you are a weird emo kid that cartoon seriously creeped me the fuck out. That has little to nothing to do with roof tiling. It would have been cooler if h started to throw the roof tiles at ppl and shit. Then he just shoots himself instead. Maybe he deserved it. What freaking messed up bastard would give cigarettes to what? A 9-year old? Yeah anyway ur film was sorta really messed up. Made me want to cut myself a little bit. Only a little though. So my wrists are safe...for now.

Two words: Salad Fingers. (Google it)

As for this... issue... hang out with different people. Not popular people, not emos, not nerds, just people. You'll find them much nicer company then most other groups.

I've resisted grabbing a girl's ass all my life. Is that normal? Actually, I don't know the difference between normal and abnormal kids anymore...
