Automatic AFK kick server option
« on: July 01, 2006, 01:42:33 pm »
Taking an idea from the anti-camping thread, how about an anti-AFK option? I can't think of anyone who'd not want to see them booted, but often times people just don't bother to kick vote them off, especially when the AFK is on the opposing team. So, how about a simple inactive timer -- say 20-30 seconds -- after which the player gets a window requesting player input before getting booted off the server. Ten seconds to respond, and if nothing is entered, the player is kicked; otherwise, play resumes.

I agree but the input should be something simple like pressing a letter and make it about 1 mnutes or more afk time because of camprs etc.. Imagine having one pop up every 20 sec while camping

I agree with this idea, it should be a server-side setting of how long people are allowed to be idle before kicked.

Krillious, even campers move their mouse around often enough that they wouldn't get kicked for being afk.

When campers do their thing, they usually crouch, thus holding down the S (default) key... wich will tell this A.AFK.K (auto afk kick) that the player is active.... :P

Dont know how to solve it when theyre proning though.... :-/

Did you know that pressing ALT+F4 to quit Soldat (while conected to a server) causes your soldier to remain in the server?
It stays there, inactive as if you were AFK, and only disconnects after some 5 minutes.

Maybe MM could add some code to the client to always send a "please disconnect me" packet everytime the program is closed.

20-30 seconds is way too short, but it's not a bad idea aside from that.

Don't spectators take up available open positions just the same, even though they're not playing the game? Besides, you should do all that before you start playing or after. In a game where people rely on others to be ready and playing, AFKs need to be dealt with quickly since they hold back the team and stop others from playing.

I know, but how come on CSS servers i have NEVER been kicked or even threatened for being spec. they just live with it. oh no, a spot is taken up on the server. there are hundreds more. first come, first serve. if i want to go grab a soda middle-of-game, i think that should be allowed. maybe an AFK kick would be ok, but a spec kick too? omg, not right.

If you wanna grab a soda then at least inform your teammates you're gonna be AFK for some time.
Sometimes I have to answer the phone while I'm playing.. I always send a message to my team warning them that I'm gonna be AFP cause I have to go answer the phone. Never got kicked.

If you just go away and leave your soldier there we can't guess what you're doing.

I believe it's 5 minutes, Which is way too long! If I'd had the option I think I'd set it to 30-45 seconds on my server.

I support the idea fully!

Why? What if someone needs to go to the bathroom or get some cookies? They shouldn't lose their place. It's perfectly fine at a few minutes.

^Hey guys, going to the corner store for a second. Back in 5-10.

Courtesy doesn't make it any better. Name me one team sport that has bathroom and cookie breaks. You can do that before or after you play -- not during.

Lol I didn't realize how stupid a cookie break sounded. But still. this isn't a serious game for me, I like to play for fun. So, I dont cmpare it to serious sports. People can go to the bathroom if they need too.

Yes, because the bathroom is not in our control and it a necessary thing. I've gotten kicked because I was inactive when I went to the bathroom. It was like 20 seconds. :(

I like to play for fun.

So do I. The problem is you're not playing when AFK, and you're dimmishing the fun for the rest of the team you burden when doing so.

Yes, because the bathroom is not in our control and it a necessary thing. I've gotten kicked because I was inactive when I went to the bathroom. It was like 20 seconds. :(

You got up from the computer, ran to the bathroom, did your thing, washed your hands, and returned to the PC within 20 seconds?  ::) I find that hard to believe; more so, that someone would identify you as AFK, begin a kick vote, and have enough people vote to kick you within 20 seconds.

Well, I have nothing against idlers. But I guess this wouldn't do any harm.

And I always eat cookies while playing! It would be a real pain in the ass if the timer was set to something like 25 seconds. I would have to run like hell to the cookie can and back - just to find out that I was kicked a second before I managed to grab the mouse.

Long live Nazi-Communism!
