Annoying Pop-ups
« on: July 01, 2006, 07:30:16 pm »
Just today I've started having some problems with desktop pop-ups. I think it might have something to do with the fact that I downloaded and tried to open a keygen (I know..) for the program PhotoMatix. Upon opening, AVG reared it's ugly head with a detected virus. I healed it and deleted the Keygen. Then the pop-ups started and I have no fucking idea how to get rid of them. Ad-Aware and Spybot didn't help and so far AVG hasn't detected any viruses and I don't think it will. This is what I get:

It's obviously not really a windows message because up to now when I've clicked on the icon it has taken me to a few dodgy sites, such as:

Any suggestions? I'd appreciate any help I can get.

Oh em gee it's hitman

Have you tried Pop-Up Blocker by STOPzilla?

Just google it.  It will show up.

hitman, get the following programs, update them, then reboot into safemode and do a full scan with each:
ad-aware (freeware)
eWido (free, full-featured two-week trial)
spybot search & destroy

get all three, do the scan, and that will most likely remove anything on your system that is doing this.  If those three can't do it, you've got virtually no chance but to reinstall windows or google a bunch and find manual removal instructions

Just picture 2 of those, and an auto dialer/disconnecter.
Thats what a keygen gave to me.

If it didn't find anything you can do a full scan in safe mode too.

Looks similar to some spyware I've seen before. Look for running programs such as "mssearchnet.exe", "dfrgsrv.exe" and "nvctrl.exe", boot into safe mode and delete them.

Maybe your system is on E!
OK anyway just some spyware programs and maybe reformat if you just can't seem to get rid of them

OMFG KEYGEN WTF IS YOUR PROBLEM!!
Do what frogboy says, go to Windows Task Manager, goto Processes, I'm pretty sure you know your user name, End or try to end all the processes, 1 of them should come back no matter how much you try to end it. Or if you been studying your processes you should see a fish out of water. Search it, it might be in the system32 folder, remember where it is, if you can't write it down. Run your computer in safe mode, check your processes, it should be gone, but it will start again, go back to the folder where you found it, delete it.
It might work.

Do a full scan with Hijack-this. There should be an option to create a log file.
Paste the log file in here

Thank you people, I appreciate your help, but I just did another Spybot scan and it found a running process that it had to delete on start-up. That seems to have fixed it!

Wahay.

You should probably reformat sometime anyways...
