To all you Minigun haters...
« on: May 15, 2007, 04:24:50 pm »
This isn't really a discussion about balance, but it is about the good and bad points of the minigun.

Now and again, I'm in a server and I decide to use the minigun.. For me, the minigun is actually quite challanging to use as unlike most other weapons you have to hit your target with several bullets (often between 30 and 40 at close range and sometimes nearly all 100 bullets at long range) for them to die. You have to continually keep the cursor near the target to hit and move it appropriately to compensate for bink. Burst fire is near impossible because of the start up time. All this added with the long reload time actually renders the minigun as something that requires skill to wield efficiently.

Often when I start owning the hell out of people in CTF with the minigun (you should note now that I despise minigun boosting and using the recoil to propel me across the map, and that I never do it) I often find myself on the recieving end of multiple attempts to vote kick me as well as being accused of being a noob or a sprayer. Despite the fact that I've been playing soldat for well over 4 years, and that I am known quite well in soldat (mostly by CTF-only players much like myself)

The minigun is always out done by every other primary weapon. It's the longest reload out of all of them, has the longest startup time out of all of them and is the least accurate out of all of them.

Fact is.. it's not noobish at all.

To me, if any guns are the least skill requiring.. it's the m79 and spas-12. M79 is simply to easy to use, and Spas-12 reloads too fast... by judging when to start and stop reloading correctly, and with a bit of luck you can continually fire the spas 12 at a ridiculously perpetual rate that just obbliterates anything within decent rage of it. It fires almost as fast as some fully automatic shotguns.

If theres ony thing I absolutely love about the minigun though.. is it's certainly good for annoying the hell out of people though (particularly those who complain about minigunners constantly) I find if you use the /mercy bug and give them a hail of bullets and blood it can easily cause chaos and confusion and send their blood pressure soaring  :P

minigun is pretty much one of the hardest weapon to use, if not the hardest. it's almost impossible to continuously kill while stay alive.

personally, i can rank up 2-3 kill max in a good no lag server where all bullets register, then either die or have to retreat. with the huge reload and everything.

yea it's definitely hard to master

I used it on u13 DM and pwned.
The boosting can be very useful, and is one of the advantages of minigun.

and how, exactly, does getting you higher on the ground proves to be one of the main advantages of minigun?

because to me, it seems like to be wasting bullets as well as being a stationary target. unless for flag run, i see no point in it

1.4 minigun is much easier to use than 1.31, it's still not taken seriously, but it is much more powerful.

With all the m79:ers around high ground gives you +5 agility and you kill em all!

True....They can't hit you when you're moving too fast.

No, I don't despise minigun, I just don't use it a lot. Mostly because I play TW, where that gun is INSANELY powerful compared to the others, in Realistic. As such, it's usually disabled.

And, the boosting is indeed useful if you're an FC. Not only do any hitting bullets slow down your pursuers, but the gun also boosts you backwards.

And, with the bink against snipers and M79ers, the minigun is rather useful for spraying.

Which again goes back to TW: It'd be like a hailstorm of bullets if you sprayed, or fired into a closed space.

I'd just like to try out the Minigun in realistic mode....
Don't say that you're Magic. Because you aren't, and I am.
All-around good with weapons that aren't long range, except in TW.
Now be careful out there, soldier.

I cannot use a mini-gun. I agree that the weapon is quite difficult to handle sometimes, especially during realistic mode.

I don't care if anyone uses the weapon. I could take someone down easy with a AUG or AK, they all work wonders.

I found the minigun to be better in 1.4.0 than it was in 1.3.1. At least on some maps. I own on maps like factory with it.

I just met like 2 guys on a CTF server that used the minigun sometimes. It's really not that bad, I got owned a few times (but they got owned too because my eagles were more versatile in most situations ;D )

@Kryp -- go buy some skills. use /command to bring up the commands.

The only bad thing about it is the boosting really, although that seems somewhat decreased in 1.4

Hey Mangled!

I think it's cool that people really use this weapon as primary! I surely agree with you about it being difficult to handle since the accuracy of the weapon simply sucks from long range. Respect mate!

I'm someone who was born with the m79 =) Known names like WeedMeister, Koil' and Kain-San raised me with that weapon when I took my first steps into the Soldat world. "M79 is simply to easy to use" Ofcourse, it's used too easily by those terrorist noobs thinking they are the next-gen suicide-bombers!

Thank God there are still people that take weapons serious, and step over the "ease-of-use" of ever one of them, while one is more difficult to master as the other.

I never insult people about their weapon choice. Why did I post choice there anyway? Exactly!
Everybody's free to choose his/her weapon right?

Calling people nub for using a weapon that he/she is good with is just nub itself..

Keep up the good work Mangled! Maybe they'll give the minigun some extra features to make life easier for you =)
( Hopefully they'll bring the m79 back into it's own state too =( *sniff* )
