I finally have new RAM for the server (read: not from Corsair), and will be upgrading/replacing the old RAM at 5:30 PM CST.

The forums and all U13 hosted servers and many U13 hosted sites/apps (not all, just the ones hosted on outcry) will be offline for 15-30 minutes at this time.

Where were you 4 weeks ago, a-4-year-old? Don't you remember the catastrophic hardware failure caused by the RAM? This is to prevent further stuff like that from happening.

Yeah, it was catastrophic all right. But at least your bowels still worked during that time, right?

It's like installing a new smoke detector to prevent hippies from starting a fire. About 9/10 of people won't notice there's a new smoke detector.

yeah, catastrophic hardware failure caused by a faulty module of ram, an unnecessary module of ram, that's why we can still have this little chat.

No, it is necessary.  A lot of things I host are on another server right now, and that server is struggling to keep up.  I couldn't run them on this one because it doesn't have enough RAM to do it all at once (right now).

I have to postpone the downtime until later tonight, I have to work late.  I'll post back before it is going to happen

I am going back to the datacenter now that I'm done working on what kept me late.  It will be down around 8PM CST, 40-50 minutes from now.

edit: I got here faster than planned.  I am taking the server down now, it is 7:30 PM CST

Seems like everytime something good happens, something else happens to nullify it. Perhaps a garden of 4 leaf clovers would be in order :P

So where's the good?

The bad is that the new RAM I just got (not from Corsair) is bad.  I couldn't figure out which modules were bad (of the 4), and the server had been down for an hour already, so I put the Corsair RAM back in and decided to deal with this later, after testing the RAM in another machine and getting any bad stuff replaced.

I think there is a lesson to be learned here, don't ever ship ram.

If at all possible, get it from a trusted local distributer.

I know one direct manufacturer in my town off the top of my head.

If you check, you would probably find a manufacturer where you live.

unless you're going to the factory and buying it off of the warehouse shelves, it is still being shipped to a local vendor.

Who is the manufacturer in your town?  I don't know about you, but even if I had some no-name brand manufacturer in my local area, I'm not about to buy high-performance server-grade uber-reliable RAM from them, that is... if they even make and sell such a thing, and, in theory "without shipping it."
