Violence in Video games
« on: May 31, 2007, 06:16:29 pm »
I know this is a bit of a one sided debate on a forum devoted to a violent game, but this "issue" is starting to piss me off.

Immediately after the VT shooting Jack Thompson and Dr. Phil decided to jump the e-gun and blame video games, lucky for the general public they were shut up by the evidence (or lack of it) the shooter had no games or any "addiction" to violent video games.

Jack Thompson files frivolous lawsuits trying to ban Rockstar from existing by disregarding the first amendment rights. He needs to be disbarred

Funny thing irony is:
Quote
"This is frankly once again just the Bar going off the deep end trying to use Bar rules to limit my First Amendment activism," Thompson said.

If it wasn't so damn fun to be violent then we would all be petting virtual bunnies in a magical forest of cuddles.

This reminds me of when I had to do a health project on weed in 9th grade, and I made it a legalize-weed campaign. The teacher sent me to drug councilling (Funny I dont smoke stuff though, asthma).

But year, I think that people who try to ban video games are stupid, there is no need to do this and it will only make us more mad. "You can pry that game out of my cold, dead hands."

I dont mind violence in video games, and sure sometimes its good (not to mention all games are extremely tame compared to other violence in media). Why Thompson goes after these instead of movies which succeed in detail, I don't know?

I also find it funny that in the most silliest of cases, people always jump the first amendment. Sure, the 1st amendment is great and video games ARE protected by it. By all means, its a perfect claim to keep violence in games and it is legit. However, people defend this so vehemently in the most stupid cases. Freedom of expression often pokes its head around topics like games, fashion statements, movies, music. If THESE are so important that you have to speak for freedom of speech with such a passion, maybe you should be reevaluating priorities.

Well, its a double edged argument. For one, it is protected expression and stating it should end it, but some people don't get it. Maybe thats why people become so passionate, however, I always feel other undertones when these things arise.

I find myself passionate about this issue because basically Jack Thompson thinks that every person who plays video games is going to go kill people.

He's allowed to blame video games for every violent crime, but we're allowed to tell him to shut up and complain to whoever reports it for giving it airtime and he's not allowed to use the fact that he's a lawyer as a pedestal to rest his prejudices on. If he wants to bash stuff so bad, he should get a blog. Then everyone who cares can go read his opinions.
Also, note that violent crimes nationwide have gone down since Doom was released.

I think its a bit deeper than that, I mean, he's just an idiot. Why even bother?

From wikipedia:
Quote
In 1999, Thompson represented the parents of Bryce Kilduff, an 11-year old boy who committed suicide by hanging himself. Police believed that the death was an accident, and that Kilduff was imitating Kenny, a character from the Comedy Central series South Park, which Bryce, according to his parents, had never watched. Thompson called for Comedy Central to stop marketing the show and toys based on the series to children. “You see, the whole show — thrust of the show is it’s — it’s cool for kids to act like the characters in South Park.”[121]
He's not dumb, he just wants to be rich, famous, and have attention.
He gets rich by being a lawyer.
He gets famous by having stupid ass lawsuits that everyone thinks are completely retarded except for his cult of anti freedom people.
He gets attention from everyone talking about his dumb lawsuits and how dumb his cult is.

He is actually a smart man by being able to do all of these things, but goes about it in a very dumb way.

Haha, do you go to a private school? I can't imagine getting into trouble for that at the school I go to.

On topic: people are bound to come up with objections to everything and anything; just recently a group of people in China demanded that a book store stop selling the Bible because of its violent passages that condone murder. None of their proposed ideas ever go anywhere because they're complete crackpots, so I wouldn't lose sleep over naysayers like Jack Thompson. The guy is a biased bastard and everybody who has the power to do anything about "violent video games" knows it.

if they're going to ban violent videogames why haven't they banned violent books, movies, comics, toys and television?

Maybe one day he just woke up and thought "Oh, I'm just gonna go and try to ban some violent video games so that kids don't go out and try to kill their dog in 'debug mode'"

Jack Thompson isn't really deep. He's just being completely shallow and insane that he didn't even play Halo 2 his whole life. Right now, he just wants to ban violent games so that 4-year-old kids can stop kicking his ass on XBOX live.

games have taught me to eat tablets when i see ghosts and jump on people who threaten me and have alos given me a fetish for crawling through pipes for gold
not really violent

books have told me how to dispose of bodies and how to properly kill someone with a bayonet [without jamming it in the ribcage]
movies have taught me racism and how to beat women [not that i mind]
comics have taught me how to backhand slap just... right
television makes me want to buy voilent toys to re-enact the violence i see on television

Does anyone think Jackyboy will get so frustrated of all the resistance that he'll snap and one day kill everyone who's ever bought or played a video game?
