Server requierments
« on: June 01, 2007, 02:58:16 am »
From the manual:

Minimum Requirements:

Quote
- 333mhz processor
- 32 MB RAM
- Some free MB on disk
- Sound card
- Network card or modem
- Microsoft Windows 98/Me/2000/XP/Linux or other Unix with Linux binary compatability

What kind of RAM is it?
What kind of processor is it?

since I am pretty sure that newer processors are more powerful per mhz. same with the RAM.

would it matter? Just get a decent 'computer/laptop' without spending lots of money....

It does not really matter. I have ran Soldat server successgully with 233MHz Pentium 2 and 333MHz Celeron, both worked very well.

I have played on a server which had 24MB of RAM and 133MHz Pentium, it worked fine aswell, except that on map change it was a bit slow.

The thing is that I am considering to sell soldat servers for quite a low price. (europen server)

but then I want to calculate how many servers I can run on the server.

if the server requerments named by noob face was by a pentium II. pentium II has a low FSB while other processors has a faster FSB. that way you can run them faster and wont need as much Mhz.

same with RAM I think.

You cannot host multiple servers (to rent/sell) on a p3 or p2 or celeron.  You will need at least a gigabyte of RAM to host a larger volume of servers... but even more if you end up hosting dozens of servers.

I dont think I will grow verry big.
but I might rent a 512 mb ram with 3ghz pentium4 hyper threading. 100mbps

Well, you aren't quite correct there, I think. (I might not be aswell, someone correct me if there is anything to correct)

If you take Celeron and Pentium II, Pentium II lower than 333MHz run with 66 FSB and everything above that run with 100 FSB, Celerons only with 66FSB.

Though, if you are having the 66 FSB Pentium, there is a easy way to make it to run on 100 FSB ;) (Click here

Processors created with 250µm process, can *usually* achieve higher clock frequenzies and are consuming less power, thus making ithemrun way cooler than the 350µm models.

Well, today, most recent CPU's are 200FSB, if not more. DDR2 RAM is way faster, and CPU's have their memory controllers in-die, which is alot faster than having it in the chipset.

Don't be too bothered about L2 cache really, Pentium 2 has L2 of 512KB, if I can remember right, but most Socket A Durons/Athlons were 64-256KB processors, except the Athlon XP with Barton core, which inclided 512KB of L2. (Durons were generally Athlons with less L2, this is why you could actually mod a Duron 1.4-1.8GHz to Ful blooded Athlon XP with some penciling, which enabled the extra L2, 64k -> 256k, $70 CPU to $170 CPU.)

Even today they make CPU's with lower L2 cache than the OLD Pentium 2 had, for example AMD Sempron's, they are Athlon64's, but with less L2 cache, like it was with Athlon/Duron. And actually Athlon64 3600+ X2 for AM2 (the EE model, 65W) ain't really Athlon64, it is a Dual-Core Sempron, it has 256KB of L2 per core, normal Athlin64 X2's have 512KB per core.

Oh, forgot. These are Soldatforums. But this is my favorite topic to write about! :(

*answering off topic*

well all celerons doesn't have the same FSB. the old very slow ones are 66 FSB but the one I taught of was 400 FSB. a list of celerons: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_list_of_processors

since Pentium II / III the FSP is up to 133.
so can I do this: 133(Pentium II/III FSB) / 400(celeron FSB)*333(req)  answer/2000(celerons frequenzy)?

altough a soldat server doesn't use 32mb as said it takes around 8mb. so I am kinda clueless :P.

Well, the 400FSB is probably DDR, thus meaning that the real FSB is around 200. (Double Data Rate, thats why it is x2) OR might be QDR aswell, then it would be 100FSB x 4(Quad Data Rate, or something)

I was talking about the early Slot 1 Celerons though. :P The CPU speed is calculated like this: FSB * Multiplier. Let's say taht you have some 2800MHz CPU, and 200FSB. Means that 2800/200 you get the multiplier, which is 14. 14*200 = 2800.

Soldatserver takes more ram, if you let it. It eats around 30-40;B of ram if there is that much free, but I think it can be run on lower systems aswell.

Not the latest version; it's optimized so that it takes less RAM. RAM usage is about 5-15mB currently, depending on map and scripting.

Sound card? I wouldn't think you'd need a sound card to run a server.

It is taken from Soldat's manual, thus the requirements are for Soldat, not really for the serer.
