1,500$ for this kind of laptop?
« on: June 02, 2007, 01:58:37 pm »
Ok, My laptop if very slow, and crappy. I need a new one around 1,500$. I don't know a lot about laptops, but I saw some laptops at the price with these kinda specs. Is it good?

1.66-GHz Core 2 Duo processor or faster

Microsoft XP Home (Don't know about vista.. don't really like it)

2gb of ram

At least 100gb of hard drive space

5,400-rpm hard drive or faster

Average Nvidia graphics card

14 to 15 inch widescreen

4x multiformat DVD burner or faster

3 USB 2.0 ports or more

4-in-1 memory card reader or better

One year warranty

Is that good for 1,500$. ???

1,500USD is approx. 750GBP, and I rekon that's fair for the specs you've given. The processor is quite slow, but it has a very good amount of RAM.

I can't really tell you much. Sorry.

seems ok to me. I'd personally rather go for a 17 inch regular than 14 or 15 widescreen. (search google for the acer aspire 9302wsmi_2048)

That looks ok. Why no stationary computer? You can get one that'll run Oblivion and newer games at max for that. But i'f you're not really a gamer then go for It but personally I'd go for a mac ;)

That seems to be a very descent computer, but you can get better deals for a cheaper price.  Also, for that price, that seems to be a slow processor.  I'd reconmend getting a 3.0 or higher processor.

I'd recommend a Core 2 Duo, 2GHz is very, very fast for that processor.  Definitely don't get Vista.

Take a look at the Thinkpad T60 series from Lenovo.

Your 3Ghz Pentium 4 is A LOT weaker than a cheaper Core 2 Duo. Ghz doesn't show how fast the processor is...it's about the architecture. Any Core 2 Duo is good for gaming. I got a C2D E6300 (1.86Ghz) and I can run Company of Heroes(high demanding and quite CPU dependent) at max settings. If that number really bothers you, you can always clock it. C2D clocks nicely on stock cooling.

Core 2 duo's also:
- Are damned fast
- Use very little power, resulting in very long battery life

P4s
- Run extremely hot
- use a ton of power, giving you short battery life and a huge laptop

Can you show a pic which you bought? Or atleast a name?
Did you buy a ready pack or did you buy it in seperate selected parts?

I bought Ready pack, pics are coming.

I ordered alienware. Here is the one I bought.

http://www.alienware.com/product_detail_pages/Aurora_m9700/aurora-m_overview.aspx?SysCode=PC-LT-AURORA-M-9700&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT

The price was 1,599.00$
It was a good deal.

EDIT: Aren't P4's used in desktops and Core duo 2 used in laptops?

No. Core 2 Duo's are used in both. P4's have been too slow for newer games for a long time.

Haha, I had a twitch that you were up to buy an alienware, I knew it!

Btw, what about those AMD processors? Are they powerful too?

I was in love with alienware until dell ate them. I hate dell with a passion...

But yes alienware is a good respectable brand with some nice computers, I think you chose well. 'scept for the vista part.
If you ever get a desktop I would suggest building your own, a lot cheaper and a lot more personalizedzor.
