1.4.1 crashes my PC
« on: June 07, 2007, 04:46:17 am »
With the upgrade to 1.4.1 my system now crashes out about once during every hour or two of play. It frequently occurs when there is a lot of action going on (i.e. lots of players on a small map). Soldat starts to feel laggy, missing a second or two of action, and then it just freezes. I alt-ctrl-del out but task manager is unresponsive, so I can't kill the Soldat process. I've left it sitting there, waiting for taskmgr to launch but it never does so I'm forced to reset my system.

My rig is not overheating, and is well-equipped to play Soldat.

XPPro, 6600GT, Forceware 94.24, Soldat 1.4.1

How do you know that it is not overheating?  Have you opened it up and felt your video and CPU heatsinks when this happens?

I run thermal monitoring of my system (asus monitor) and video card (RivaTuner / Forceware drivers). I alt-tab out during any game (not just Soldat) to check the current temperature of my system for that particular game under stress.  On performance 3D games I take the side off my case and use my hands as well to confirm it. I've had many years of experience with over clocking and temp management, that's not it.

For information: I know someone who has run both Soldat and Battlefield 2, and Soldat actually runs his GPU 10 degrees celsius hotter than BF2 runs it. You'd be surprised just how much Soldat works your video card.

OK guys I will take a closer look at the operating temperature again just to be sure; I'll post a temperature log if I notice any problems. In intense games I take the side of my machine off an aim a desk fan at it :)

Did you buy the computer or make it yourself?
I noticed a lot of people who make their computers often run into overheating problems because they leave all the wires out in the middle of the computer and there isn't a flow of air throughout the computer. If thats it then just tie the wires together and make them all neat. Clean it too.

Yes I put this one together myself. The wires situation is considerably better since I picked up one of Enermax's modular PSU's. I have the wires tied up where I can, but fans do need a clean, air flow isn't great. I logged the result during an hour of play, during some heavy 10-man CTF.

Log results
GPU <=70c (normal operating is 60). It throttles around 90ish, so well under.
CPU <=50c

So overheating isn't the issue.

It may very well be that Soldat is just explosing a bug in a driver for some component of your system; Hows the driver situation for not only your videocard, but other chipsets, particularily audio chipsets?

It's possible that's it's the Forceware driver set I'm using, 94.24 is a beta, but it's an official nVidia beta. As for sound card I'm running an Audigy 4. The driver situation on this is a little bit more uncertain, Creative sound drivers have long been a total mess in terms of identification and updates.

Dxdiag reports ...
Name: ctaud2k.sys
Version: 5.12.0001.1161
Date: 16/06/2005
WHQL: Yes
Provider: Creative

I'm in the process of updating my audio drivers now, as I've identified a September 2006 release. Creative appears to have fixed things up since I last looked. I'll post again if my system continues to crash.

As for other chipsets, I maintain all the latest drivers straight from SiS (provider for my ASUS mobo).

Hey I also get this bug, SOLDAT crashes, not my PC. It does not release the resolution when I try to switch to the task manager, meaning that windows stays in the games resolution, and I cant see the mouse cursor. When (alt+tab), It says the task manager is up there, but I cant access it.
This happens sometimes in the middle of a game. It cant be the GFX card that seizes due to overheating, because I can see my desktop and the alt tab window  popping up. I have a radeon 9200SE.

I just suffered another crash, so it's not the sound drivers. Any other guesses?

That sounds like CPU overheating, or a faulty CPU; both of which are not happening in my case.

No, Its because I'm running about 41 to 61 processes at once so thats why it takes 20 minutes to start up my pc, 5 minutes to open my web browser, and 7 minutes to startup soldat. So my CPU can't handle my workload so thats y i upgraded to core 2 and ended about 20 processes in my task mangers  list.

Did you try any compatibility mods?

I've turned on video compatibility, I'll see how I go with that. It looks pretty bad again being at 640x480. If it crashes again, I'll try force software (which I'm loathe to do). If there are any others, please let me know (if I download them, please give the URL).

My 5 year old computer can run way more than 80 processes and not crash. It has to be something else.

try downloading Hare and Anitcrash from http://www.dachshundsoftware.com/index.html Hare speeds up and accelerates 2D and 3D full screen games and Anticrash stops you from crashing.
