Yup, if you can't instantly play this simple piece of audio, you might as well throw away the guitar.
Here's a random newb playing it:

See? Easy!

Blink 182 is an excellent choise, 'cept their music relies much on their insane drummer, Travis Barker. It's really fun to play, though, and I'd definitely recommend it when you get just a little more experienced.

Now, Nirvana is actually another really good suggestion. I'm a die hard Nirvana fan myself, and the music means so much to me that I still play their otherwise simple songs even now that I've gotten better. It's really good for starters, esepecially the more more "calm" songs such as Polly or Dumb. As a matter of fact I'd recommend you Dumb. Excellent song.
Also, this was in late Nirvana drummer Dave Grohls calm period, so you should be doing just fine without the drums.

If this doesn't do it, try fooling around with a little of your own, you know? Make him do a few powerchords, and you guys could easely make a song :) Plus, homemade is always more fun..

edit: greenday has a lot of repeating the same notes, so you learn that and you can basically play most of the song.

Seconded. Greenday, even though they aren't the best band in the world, have the easiest songs for beginners and are a perfect way to start learning guitar or bass.

Hey, I learned guitar playing Green Day!

G D Em C
Am C Am C

There you have 'When I Come Around' :P (first song I learned I think)

Hehe...not only do you only need to know about four chords per song, but you only need to have a repertoire of about six chords to play their entire discography.
