Official news about the future of Soldat and Crimson Glory
« on: June 16, 2007, 07:40:45 am »
Soldat:
There are a few things that need to be fixed still. Especially some network problems which will be resolved. Also BattlEye is fixed and will be fully functional in the next version. This will be a quick fix so expect it soon.
Also because I can afford it now I will be buying a dedicated server for all Soldat related sites and my future projects. It will be maintained and setup by FliesLikeABrick. This will be a huge step forward for Soldat and the entire community.

Crimson Glory:
I have ceased development of Crimson Glory and have moved on to working on another project. Crimson Glory is on a very advanced state, the whole engine is built, there is a lot of graphics done and is fully playable (without net-code). I had to come this far to realize that this is not the game I want to do. The main reason is the 3D aspect of it. Modelling and map making in 3D takes too much time. I want the game to be as easy to mod as possible, making it possible to edit the game just with a paint program not with advanced 3D editors and animators. I will release the game as it is now just to show that I wasn`t doing nothing during this time. You will see how it looks and how the engine works. The engine will be used (after switching to 2D sprites) in my next game. I won`t give out any information about it yet, but as I see it now, I truly think it will be the best game ever made in history.

edit: the source of Crimson Glory has been released here: http://mm.soldat.pl/?p=28

Trust me, no one saw that coming :)

Shit no, I'll say.
So Michal, is it to be understood from this that there will be no further working on soldat after the next version comes out, or after "the few things" are fixed?

"...as I see it now, I truly think it will be the best game ever made in history."

I have no doubt it will be  ;)

Yay, 2d games FTW. Never really liked the 3d concept of Crimson glory, I have to admit that. Anyways, whatever project is next after soldat, I hope it will have more modding options. Or atleast add more options to soldat.

cheers and thanks for the info, really good to hear you will fix soldat :P

When will you be releasing the current version of CG?

Thanks anyway for all the hard work you've put in.

The best thing for MM to do right now is to finish working on Soldat and get everything related to it settled down.  After that, it'll be the best time for him to work on Crimson Glory.  I'm looking forward to it.

I really think that Crimson Glory would have been better in 2D; just look at the quality of some of the Soldat maps out there now. Not to mention, the camera was always meant to be a fixed perspective; 3D from that kind of perspective can be very difficult to map/model for. Flying a 2D plane, with animations for rotation, would have led to not only a nicer look artistically(as artists have full control over what you see, without relying on how the engine decides to render it), it would also be, as you said, easier.

Still looking forward to what kind of a state it's in though, and for more news on your next project.

I didn't expect this, but I did get a new signature out of it.

Mmm. I eagerly await news of this new game.

Well there will be working on Soldat, just maybe not by me. That's all I can say now.

I decided that 2D airplanes would not be good. It would look "cheap" or old like Triplane Turmoil. Especially because of all the camera action that I planned. There would be no place for pixelized airplanes with a zoomed camera. Also maps have to be 3D because there is a whole sea at view, with mountains and everything in the far plane. It would just not look good with 2D, it would look like an old nintendo game with parallax effects for background and cheap tricks like that. CG should be 3D or not at all. So I decided to make a different game instead.

Awesome news, can't wait to find out more about the new project!

Question about the Crimson Glory version you plan on releasing: will it run on older computers? Seems pretty advanced sounding.

The best thing for MM to do right now is to finish working on Soldat and get everything related to it settled down.  After that, it'll be the best time for him to work on Crimson Glory.  I'm looking forward to it.

and it sounds like thats exactly what he's going to do, something I've been recommending to him for a long time :P

I can't wait to build and manage this server for him, it is something I've been wanting to do for months, and I'm very glad he finally decided to.  This will allow the official Soldat stuff to be separated properly from the U13 things, and will provide increased reliability and performance for everything: the forums, soldat homepage, lobby, bug tracker.... and the other half-dozen components of Soldat's hosting.

Usually I hear about most news from MM well before he announces things, but this stuff with CG he kept secret even from me.  I knew he had some large announcements to make, but he wouldn't tell me what they were :P

I can't wait for what the near and distant future hold.

edit: a question for MM:

Will CG be released open-source or in binary format, or both?  Hopefully both like R.

yey just what I hoped, not another 3d game, but a cool fast and easy 2d game.

3d multiplayer games usually suckass, since they've not got the right interface etc.
