Math Help
« on: June 18, 2007, 01:54:04 pm »
A few questions:

What is the slope of the line y = -3x + 4?

Give three points that lie on the line 3x + 2y = 6.

Give three points that lie on the line y = -4

I suck at Math.

1: the formula is y=mx+b, and m= slope and b= Y-intercept.  so if the line is y=-3x+4, m=-3.

2: Thats not a proper line.

3: is it y=-4x? if not, it's not a proper line. if it is, then all you would have to do is graph it out.

Give three points that lie on the line y = -4

I suck at Math.
3x+2y=6
2y=-3x+6
y=-3/2x+3

now it is in standard form...

as for points, you can just plug a number into X and get an answer for Y the coordinate is (X,Y)

y=0+3 (0,3)
Fixed. y=-3/2*2+3=0 (2,0)

#3. (1,-4) (2,-4) (3,-4)

Hmmm, I gave you the problems exactly the way I see them.

Thanks for number one.

EDIT: I can figure out number 2 fine now.

Thanks for the help. I might have some more sometime soon.

Third one is something like this I think...

(0,-4)(1,-4)(2,-4)

...its been a while since high school.

Eh.. 4yo beat me...

I <3 algebra. can't wait for it again next year.

When Y is independent of x, like in #3, y is always the same, it is a horizontal line, when an equation like say, x=1, then the line is vertical, graphically.

OMG I'm having an exam tomorrow and I'll have to write that shit. Of course these are the easy ones...

These are just explicite and implicite forms of the equasions

and if y=-4 then it means that the line is paralel with the x coordinate line...

sry if I said something weird, it's kinda tough translating these math things in english

To lazy to do.

Chariot, how old are you? I don't mean that as a flame, but I just wonder exactly when they give you problems like this. Here in the Netherlands... those problems are for 14 year olds, I think.

I did that when I was 12-13, or 7th to 8th grade.

we're not doing your homework for you.  If you had come here asking "how do I tell the slope of a line?" "how do I find out whether a point lies in a line or not" or other "help me learn this" questions, I wouldn't have reacted like this, but you came here and blatantly asked us to answer these questions for you.
