AMERICA! (Fuck Yeah!)
Beliefs are dangerous. Beliefs allow the mind to stop functioning. A non-functioning mind is clinically dead. Believe in nothing.

Wow, I really have to catch up on my history, America was "owned" by Britan once?

Why can't Australia get loose, though! Why! Why! Why!
You do know that Australia has been completely independant from Britain since 1986, right? Almost all of the Queen's remaining powers are symbolic.

Yea, people are still given Member/Officer/Commander of the British Empire awards even though the Empire is now just a few random islands instead of a quarter* of the Earth that it used to be. Its more tradition and symbolism than substance now.

*Some scourses say it was a third, but I can't be botherd to look over a map and work it out.

And why are there 'Member of the British Empire' honours given? Surely every citizen is a member :-\ Either that or we are 'the Queens subjects'.

Well I suppose Britian has the right to show off about owning a quarter of the Earth, even if its peak was 100 years ago.

*sips tea*

SDFilm: It's not actually Member of the British Empire, as the letters spell out. It stands for Member of the Order of the British Empire, an order set up by King George the something in the early twentieth century. Go read the wikipedia article.

And random tidbit - Past MBE, OBE and CBE, there are Knight of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) and Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE), the two awards under which you gain knighthood.

EDIT: Just realised you're from England, so I probably sound a bit patronising. Don't mean to.

Oh yeah, also, the Commonwealth is pretty much the British Empire. I'm pretty sure the Queen is monarch of more countries than people realise.

Go Britain!

I thought the Govenor-General represented the queen, and seriously, I thought he had about as much say as the Prime Minister.
Eh, I knew that Australia was kind of free from British 'rule', if you must, but I never knew that was of full extent...
I blame that stupid half-assed history teacher at our school. Concentrating on the international history and the goldrush, yet not mentioning anything on Federation or anything important!

The Queen does have powers over her overseas realms, but she delegates those powers to her representatives. Technically the Royal family could re-establish an empire of sorts, but they don't because they're nice and believe in allowing people the right to rule themselves.

Pah to that, I say!

Yeah, but he's Australian, isn't he? He usually only acts on the Prime Minister's advice anyway, and the Queen usually doesn't interfere either.
