Music: Appreciate and discuss
« on: June 21, 2007, 02:46:48 pm »
Hey fellahs!
Some cracker made a topic in which to write the name and artist of what track you're currently listening to. Not bad, it's one of the largest threads on the forums. However, it's filled with info no one will ever get to care about or even witness. It's a thread where people come to post nothingness, and it remains nothingness.

However, I like the concept, and I like the tiny conversation me and a couple of blokes managed in there. It's just sad that no one care to actually join in on it, and instead they carry on with the whole "Random artists - Random audio" stuff.

So, in the spirit of musical passion, I thought it would be nice to have a thread in which to discuss "music". now, I've put those goose thingies around "music", 'cause I want it to exist in here not only as a word, but as a concept, and an object of appreciation.
It's simple, lads. Take some music you like and share it, your opinions and your feelings of it. No high fancy music theory thing, leaving the rest of us who can't read uptight music writing all behind. On the other hand, if you wanna talk crap, please stay out of here.

Thanks,
echo_trail

The word is up, Chill!

Like, back in the other thread, my mates PCW, SadistAtHeart and I were talking TripHop and Drum 'n Bass. We talked a little over a well known TripHop artist, Rjd2, and as a follow-up we went on to another group, Pendulum. Anyway, to get back on ya:
If you like that then you might like Slam too, it got in the thirties in the (UK) charts, so being a fellow brit you might have heard of it. Also it's got a funny as hell video.

Pendulum - Slam

I really like how they try to create a certain atmosphere with the song. I first heard the song without watching the vid, and I thought it was pretty rockin'. However, watching the vid afterwards gave me another impression the the song alone had first given me. ...That guy rocks! :D Too bad they rip him off in the end.

I've grown to like drum 'n bass, but I really do like TripHop more. It has the reality of Rap and HipHop, but it's still got the flow of actual music, and not just some beat  as in Rap.
Try watching this movie. It's called Chicken Bone Circuet, also by Rjd2.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eS_hbeYpcI
If that's not sugar in your ear, I don't know what is. And the video is really awesome as well. What do you think?

Never heard of this RJD2 before, but it is, indeed nice. For some reason, reminds of a little of ATB. Mixed with Johnny Hollow. No idea why. The section in the middle with people talking bugs me a bit, but it fits nicely.

And, lastly, a link to Trash80. Some of the best chip music I know of.

Right well lets show you guys what I like
The Flaming Lips - Do you Realize?
I love this band because they like to make people happy. The story behind what crappy lives some of them came out of is really neat. Just goes to show you that with drive in you it really don't matter where you grew up. Plus I mean how can you not love a band that has people in bunny suits on stage when they perform?

Ben Folds - Still Fighting It
I have been a fan of Ben since he was in Ben Folds Five. He has the perfect mix of chill and rock. Ben Folds is a great songwriter in my opinion, you can really hear emotion in his songs.

Joe Christmas - Coupleskate
Very indy a band that I got into in the 90's very very chill, plus the songwriting is great.

Johnny Cash - Five Feet High and Rising
Let me twist a quote from a great movie here:
If you don't like Johnny Cash then **** you!

Lagwagon - Heartbreaking Music
I love punk music, sadly most of it is full of ignorance and stupidity. Lagwagon is one of the most intelligent punk bands I have found.

Pedro the Lion - I Am Always the One Who Calls(Live)
I have never found anyone that can make sadness so beautiful. His songwriting is incredible and his voice is almost haunting.

Zao - Five Year Winter(Live)
While their beliefs are constantly debated I have watched their documentary dvd and I am comfortable in the fact that Dan Weyandt remains a strong christian and also has a great head on his shoulder. As well as being a great songwriter and a zombie fan. Their music is clearly rooted from a christian perspective, I really like that.

Are you kidding me? Rjd2 reminds you of ATB? No waaaay, dude! ATB is really just Club/Trance, which in my opinion is something way different. Never was much into Trance, Electronica(well, some), Techno, Dance and such.. i always thought it was low quality music, or sounds really.
Glad you liked Rjd2 though. Shows you're not completely off :D

It's not that I don't like electronic music, though. I'm crazy about Daft Punk, Prodigy and Crystal Method as well. Ever heard Rob Dougan? He made a lot of the music in The Matrix. In fact, here's a link to some of his creations:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=40798772
Quite an interresting mix of Classic, DownTempo and Electronica.. The master of it. Listen to "Clubbed to death 2" and "Furious Angels", mate. Think you might like it.
EDIT: In fact, listen to all of it. This guy is just great!

Another guy, Ben Parson. He's making some electronica/down-tempo thing. I think you might like it, mate. Here's a link for his myspace. Take a look and listen to some tracks. Especially "Crime". That one's particularry cool:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=30732861

Want more electronica bands, just ask for it. I got a whole bunch.. :P

Hey, try listening to some of this. It's not electronica, but it's really cool:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCbZsov7Oi8
It's a BMX video, but nevermind that. just pay attention to the song. It's called One Million Miles Away by a guy who calls himself J Ralph. i don't really know what genre to categorize it with, I just know it's freaking awesome. Plus, I'm into BMX'ing, so this vid goes right home for me ;)

ec-ec-ech-echo

By the way, I realise Graham has just released a list of bands there. I'll take the time to listen and reply to it after releasing this.

EDIT, as promised:
Ben Folds, huh? I don't hate it, but it definitely isn't blowing me away. It's just too calm for me and too slow. It's not that I don't appreciate relaxed music, 'cause I really do. Nothing better than just sitting back with a good track running in the background, letting your thoughts wander off along with the music. This, however, just doesn't do it for me.

Don't worry though, you're not completely lost, mate. You're into punk, which is always a good sign in my eyes. Never did listen to lagwagon though, but I actually like that song a lot! Sorta new wave/punk, but still it hasn't grown to be one of medern punkrocks sad sad parodies. Not bad. I knew you had a bit of taste somewhere ;)

Hey, those Pedro the Lion are amazing! They sound just like one of my favorite bands, a danish band called Kashmir. That's just really good music, mate! Thumbs up for that! And it's live as well.. Man, i always loved live music. I've been to a ton of concerts. I just love the atmosphere, you know?
Ey, try listening to some of this, Kashmir:

Kashmir, Surfing the Warm Industry
http://youtube.com/watch?v=1-DdEEiCsvQ

Kashmir, Mom in love, Daddy in space
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ascSnoYFhHk

kashmir, Miss You
http://youtube.com/watch?v=R8Cay8tFhpg
This one, Sadly, is really poor in quality. It's one of their greatest.

Coil - Sex with Sun-ra

http://youtube.com/watch?v=UtmYQf6pXaI

One of the greatest entities in existence. While this song isn't a great cross-section of their work (hardly any one of their songs are), but its a great song nonetheless.

Coil - The Dreamer is Still asleep (remixed)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=xEMQbtPqFe8

No video of the original, just a remix. Still, you can get some sense of it. The original and live versions are better.

Coil - Die Wölfe Kommen Zurück

http://youtube.com/watch?v=viLJ9H917fY

Another great work by them (except for those vocals, which are not in the original), shows a portion of their drone pieces, which there are plenty of.

Thats a somewhat accurate cross-section, however many styles are missing.

Ok Ben is pretty diverse in the chill and rock area... check out this song http://youtube.com/watch?v=3pWB2N0_TxM

As for Kashmir they are ok, I don't know they seem talented but nothing really clicked when I listened to them.

The Chariot
By far my favorite band out there. They are thoroughly Christian and thoroughly brutal. Josh Scogin is such an amazing lyricist. And when I saw them live, I got goosebumps.

Norma Jean
My Second favorite. Also a christian band. They go hand in hand with the Chariot though, because this is Josh Scogin's old band that he left to start The Chariot. This is the video for what is possibly the best NJ song that there is. I saw them a few weeks ago and it...completed me.

As I Lay Dying
One of the best Metalcore bands out there. Such powerful music and a driving stage presence accompanied with thoughtful emotional lyrics. Tim Lambesis is a lyrical genius.
@ †, Dan Weyandt did guest vocals on As I Lay Dying's latest album.

Underoath
It seems like everyone likes them these days. So I don't expect anyone too be surprised. But if you were a fan in the pre-Chasing Safety days like me, then I applaud you. The old stuff is especially good. Dallas Taylor/Spencer Chamberlain/Aaron Gillespie are really good lyricists. I only like a few of the new songs in terms of lyrics. But I like how the stepped up their sound to more of a hardcore feel. Also a Christian Band.

As Cities Burn
Good emotional  band. I love this song. Everything about it.
"Would you still love me in famine? As when Love began at the harvest?
Or would you gain the whole world? Son, I loved you at your darkest.
What good is the whole world when I promise no tomorrow?
I only promise your tomorrow will never take you past my palm.
What is love without trust?
At my word, would you bring your Isaac?"
Also Christian.

He Is Legend
Fun hardcore band. I've been a fan since the beginning. They are energetic and Schuylar Croom has the best beard ever. Whether they are christian or not is debated. But I don't think they are.

All of these bands are pretty heavy. I love the music that gets me pumped.

Oddly enough, it does. That one song, at least. I mean, listen to that song you linked us to, and then listen to ATB's 'Marrakech'. Something about it. Wish I knew.

I love trance, though. Some techno is okay, but not great, imho. Goa is my favorite. And "Electronica" was just a word invented by Madonna, man :P

Take this link, it's very good. It'll get your terminology right, entertain you, and let you sample good electronic music. Try some of Paniq's stuff. He has, among other things, lots of good trance. And you can download his songs for free (and legally so), which is an automatic win for him.

Awesome, isn't he?

Ey, ever heard of Juno Reactor? He made a couple of songs featuring them, some of them also in the matrix. I would give you a link to some of their songs on youtube, but sadly they suck at making videos :D You're better off by listening to the music alone, so here's a link to their myspace:
http://www.myspace.com/juno_reactor
I especially suggest "conquistador part 1"..

Take a look at it.

By the way, look at this as well: http://www.thecrystalmethod.com/ --> Videos --> Take your pick!

In the Musique Concrete section, the guy gets some stuff mixed up. Especially the industrial, I believe it was Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson was the one who is quoted for "industrial".

To tell you the truth, I really don't like there old stuff. I only found Alone in December and When the sun sleeps listenable from what I have of there old stuff. Spencer is a better screamer..... From there new stuff I'd say I like You're ever so inviting the most. My favourite song from them would be It's dangerous business walking out your front door... :P I'm not christian, but I still like there stuff. Holy ****, gotta apreciate Aaron's ability to play drums and sing at the same time :)

It's dangerous Business walking out your front door

Also Muse is sex. I'm starting to listen to the alot. Starting to learn there songs on bass, and so far I can play Time is running out pretty good. These are mien favourite songs :-*

Time is running out

Hysteria

Thoughts of a dieing athiest

Citizen Erased

I also really like Alexisonfire, always have :) Mostly their older stuff. I don't really like there new album Crisis. I like to stick to Watch Out! and there debut.

No transitory

Pulmonary Archery

Passing of america (Moneen and Alexisonfire Crossover)

- Yeah, I really like Spencers scream. But Dallas was good I liked their death metal sound. Speaking of Dallas, have you heard his new band? Maylene & The Sons Of Disaster. Farmcore. So awesome.

Aaron truly is amazing. Do you know if he is leaving Underoath or not due to his new band?

- I haven't heard much from Alexisonfire. Do they have any heavy stuff?

- Yes, Protest The Hero is pretty good.

- The only Brand New I ever liked was Your Favorite Weapon.

I like quite a bit of music, myself. Drum and Bass, Grind, Ambient, Hardcore, Glitch, Metal. Hell, I even dabble with folk a little.

The Evpatoria Report - Best damn instrumental ambient band I've ever heard, period. Everybody

Sufjan Stevens - This guy is talented with quite a bit of instruments, and he's got an awesome voice. It's pretty much folk music, but with a bit from a bunch of other genres. Each song is vastly different. He's got no official myspace, and the crappy non-official ones have no music. So, go look him up somewhere.. I don't recommend youtube, none of those videos compliment his talent.
