Well, I don't usually like posting in music topics, but it seems like the outcome so far has been pretty diverse.  So I'll contribute my bit to it with a thing I know only a few other members of this forum listen to:  folk music, and folk metal!

The first band that comes to my mind when I think of folk metal are the gods of Russian folk metal, Pagan Reign.  All of the music is composed by one member; Orey.  He plays all of the folk instruments and guitar.  The other members are just peons, and it's clear that Orey is well-versed in music theory and virtuous in every instrument he plays.  Unfortunately they broke up this February, but I've had the honor of exchanging plenty of emails with him as we both collaborate for another folk metal band.  Here's my favorite song from their latest album (it's worth noting that every song is nearly this awesome.  There's no boring filler tracks in the album, it is all fast-tempo folk metal.)
Pagan Reign - Nebesnye Strazhi

The second track I'm going to share with you cockfags is one by a Gaulish Celtic metal band by the name of Hantaoma!  Where Pagan Reign uses just about every folk instrument native to Slavic Russia, Hantaoma uses only the Medieval bagpipes and a fiddle - but the mix is still damn good.  Here's the title track from their latest album, it has one of my favorite fiddle leads in all of folk metal.
Hantaoma - Malombra

Next I've got a track by the Swedish folk metal band MÃ¥negarm.  I had the pleasure of seeing these guys when they came to the Heathen Crusade in Minneapolis this January, it was their first show overseas, and their only stop :)  In addition to being excellent folk musicians (it's not always evident in metal/folk blends), they're also really fun people to be around.  After the show they all took over the hotel lobby they were staying at and played a folk jam session with everyone else who showed up to the Heathen Crusade.  Janne is probably one of the bestest fiddlers in folk metal.
MÃ¥negarm - Skymningsresa

This next one is probably my favorite track of them all.  It's by another Celtic metal band from France - only this time it's a Breton Celtic metal band!  All of the lyrics are in Old Breton, and they use some pretty archaic Breton instruments, like the Bombarde!  You'll notice it in this track as the high pitched thing in the beginning that sounds a bit like a smallpipe.  All of the instruments combined give Heol Telwen a very epic sound!  This band is one of my biggest inspirations for playing folk metal, and a lot of people I've collaborated with in France give them the same credit too!
Heol Telwen - Kar ar Kern

The last one I'm going to post now is by the Latvian Skyforger!  They don't use folk instruments as abundantly as the bands mentioned above, but everything Skyforger creates is influenced by Latvian history.  One thing I like about them is that they play intentionally out of tune, and it sounds good when it comes together.
Skyforger - To the Northern Shores

I was going to dig into my normal Folk music collection, but I got a little tired of going down my playlist, so I'll only give ye the folk stuff if anyone's still interested in hearing it.  I mostly collect Uilleann bagpipe / Hardanger fiddle albums.  I'll also get into my collection of avant-garde BM later lolol.

Ey Gram, Joe Christmas isn't completely off. Actually that particular song is pretty awesome. I like their garage-band style, keeps it real. Always did like bands who were able to keep it to the ground, you know? And not get all full of themselfs. Awesome.. But Zao?!! My gosh, what are you thinking? Not cool, buddy, not cool..

Also Muse is sex. I'm starting to listen to the alot. Starting to learn there songs on bass, and so far I can play Time is running out pretty good. These are mien favourite songs :-*

Time is running out

Hysteria

Thoughts of a dieing athiest

Citizen Erased

Oh yea, ain't nothing around like MUSE. This is music, people! It used to be my favorite band for so long, I could just listen to them for hours on. I still like them alot :) Oh, and they're imcredible for training when you've advanced a little on your guitar playing. I struggle with playing Hysteria and Sunburn right now, doing the Sunburn piano on guitar. Kinda hard, I think.
MUSE is just the kinda band you look at and you think, "I wanna be that guy! I wanna be in that band!".. Just can't get enough of them. Ey, anyone heard their version of "House of the Rising Sun? Man, listen to it, NOW!

In Flames
By far the best band I've ever heard. Noone even comes close. Best album: Whoracle.

Children of Bodom
Very good band. I really like the guitars. Best album: Hate Crew Deathroll.

Amon Amarth
Pwn. Awesome band. Love the whole rhythm thing. Best album: With Oden at Our Side.

Soilwork
Yeah they're good.

Ey mate, you've got some pretty hot music on right there. Allthough, none of them really blow me away. Good tunes and all, but nothing out of the ordinary, I'm afraid, at least not in my eyes. Sorry..

Oh, by the way.. Heard of The Streets? English fella doing some innocent rapping, but not your usual kind. Really, check this video out

When you wasn't famous:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciZzfy72xc0

They even made a Bloc Party remix, Banquet:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQGOEXwutDY&mode=related&search=

In fact, that takes me right on to the next band, Bloc Party. I don't really know how to categorize them, but somewhere within the newwave rock scene. They're really awesome, and I definitely think you should take a look at them. Another UK band as well, but you gotta love that feature about them.
Anyway, go figure for yourself..

I used to dig Muse, still do to an extent. I loved pretty much all of their old stuff. Black Holes and Revelations didn't do anything for me, including House of the Rising Sun.

I would suggest you listen to Plug In Baby (From Origin of Symmetry), Dascoo, it's probably my favourite song from a selection of all their stuff. Other than what Echo has already suggested, I also would suggest Space Dementia (Also from Absolution) and Shrinking Universe and Map Of Your Head (From Hullabaloo, disk one).

As for The Streets, Echo, Mike's second album sucked. Hard. Never Went To Church was the only decent thing on there, and I didn't even like it. Don't get me wrong, I bought A Grand Don't Come for Free and I heavily enjoyed it, but it seems like he lost his focus in the follow up album. I would suggest from the first album; Blinded By the Lights, Fit But You Know It and the ever shining example of pure human sadness that is Dry Your Eyes I.

Never really got into Bloc Party, I know they are ok though, hear them in the background occasionally.

EDIT:

Like, back in the other thread, my mates PCW, SadistAtHeart and I were talking TripHop and Drum 'n Bass. We talked a little over a well known TripHop artist, Rjd2, and as a follow-up we went on to another group, Pendulum. Anyway, to get back on ya:
If you like that then you might like Slam too, it got in the thirties in the (UK) charts, so being a fellow brit you might have heard of it. Also it's got a funny as hell video.

Pendulum - Slam

I really like how they try to create a certain atmosphere with the song. I first heard the song without watching the vid, and I thought it was pretty rockin'. However, watching the vid afterwards gave me another impression the the song alone had first given me. ...That guy rocks! :D Too bad they rip him off in the end.

I've grown to like drum 'n bass, but I really do like TripHop more. It has the reality of Rap and HipHop, but it's still got the flow of actual music, and not just some beat as in Rap.
Try watching this movie. It's called Chicken Bone Circuet, also by Rjd2.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eS_hbeYpcI
If that's not sugar in your ear, I don't know what is. And the video is really awesome as well. What do you think?

I didn't see this earlier because I didn't read the first page. :P Anywho, Glad to see someone else that likes Pendulum, I rarely find anyone who even knows who they are.

Also I enjoyed the song, thanks for the link, Overall it was pretty good, but I don't know what it is about pronounced drums that I dislike, the fact that my favourite part of the song was in the middle when the drums cut out just further proves my taste. I don't usually ever like it when drums are the lead instrument. Too many good songs ruined that way, Hundred Reasons being a pure example.

also Brand new

Sowing Season

I've liked songs from Brand New for a long while, but never really took the time to actually ... well, like the band. I first got interested with I Believe You But My Tommy Gun Don't. Someone not from these forums posted it on irc and for some reason I downloaded it. It went very well for the style I was into at the time. After searching through more songs like You Won't Know and Seventy Times 7 for a while, I decided I'd listen to some albums. I'm glad I did as I found some good stuff. Limousine, The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot and of course, Sowing Season. I didn't really ever like The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows, don't know why, just didn't get into it. Overall I enjoyed listening to most of this bands music.

Now it's off to find some of my music...

Yeah, considering Led Zeppelin is a great band, Wolfmother's music has to be pretty good too if it's a rip off...btw how is it a rip off? Just because it's the same music style?

I love 60- and 70's bands such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Cream. And Wolfmother seems to me to be influenced by all these bands. Firstly they've taken the synth organ from Deep Purple. The guitar play often makes me wonder if I'm listening to Cream. But mainly, I love the vocals. In one song it could remind me of Zeppelin's Robert Plant, while in another song the Wolfmother vocalist suddenly sounds like Ozzy. Rip off or not, I think it's great.

Coil - The Remote Viewer 3

From the CD "Remote Viewer". All prepared improvisation with a hurdy gurdy, synth, breton pipes, and a mix of other electronic instruments. One of the trippiest songs ever, though their "Time Machines" album is better in that area.

Muse is awesome. I first saw them at a music festival, and I'd never really heard them. But I was really surprised at how good they were. They were by far one of the best acts there.

Recently I've been listening to a lot of fairly mellow music, though I used to, and still do a bit, listen to various kinds of metal. I'd say that my favorite black metal band is Silencer, With Nattramn's Screaming stacatto vocals, backed by Steve Wols, who I think is one of the best Metal Drummers out there, and Leere whose guitar is incredible make for a really incredible combination. I also enjoy Nattramn's new project, Diagnose: Lebensgefahr Which is much more ecclectic, and much of it is atonal and quite strange.

What I've been listening to a lot more of recently is lighter music, with some Power Pop, and Punk-ish bands, along with General Alternative.

Ima Robot - 10:10

Ima Robot is an LA based band that plays mostly upbeat alternative. Their music ranges from fast, danceable pop, to slow ballads. Their singer, Alex Ebert, though definately the bands frontrunner. He writes the lyrics, and the band as a whole composes the music. They currently have 2 full albums out, with another ecpected in october, and a smattering of EPs have been released. The song I put up is 10:10 (Sexy) and was a B-side from the first, selftitled album.

Giant Squid describes their music as "Ecclectic Doom Metal". Their latest album "Metridium Fields" has a wonderful collection of music, ranging from "Summit" which is a slow, downbeat, and very forlorn, to "Neonate" which is fairly fast and heavy with the primary subject matter being the eating of one's young. The title track, "Metridium Field", is the most interesting, I feel, as it opens with a piece of dialouge, and continues to be a heavy 21 minute instrumental, with some powerful Trumpet and Saxaphone solos.

I'll throw some more bands up later...

Well excuse me but I find most of the songs listed as not really appealing.
I'm not saying they're bad, just that I'm not into that type of music.

I love Hard Rock and Metal and I'm going to try to present you some of the best bands out there. Atleast I think they're one of the best :P

Iced Earth

A really great Power Metal band that create a powerful symphony of guitar riffs and drums.
They have a somewhat mystic athmosphere around some of their songs. To an ordinary mainstream music listener this band might seem like it's something more darker.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTYPSRIO0o4 - the singer is matt barlow, he is noot in the band anymore, but he has one of the best vocals around

Evergrey

A modern power metal band with great sound effects and lyrics. The vocal is somewhat unusual for this type of music but it fits really well with their style. You really have to try this one even if you're not a metalhead. Yeah you'd have to learn how to enjoy some more powerful music, but the vocal could be the thing that would attract you to them

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1e-WXm8cbK4   one of their best songs A touch of blessing

Disturbed

A hard rock/metal band from chicago. The vocal is kinda interesting and their songs can be found on some of the games like MTX Mototrax, NFSMW and others.
Their disticnt feature is the singer's animalistic growls that you don't really notice after you listen to them for some time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2I2b64-ykyE Stricken, one of their best songs
(note there are some more high quality videos but I haven't had the time to find em)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KW8DRSvEoQ - Land of confusion, a cover of a song originaly made by Phill Collins

Killswitch Engage

A metalcore band similiar to As I lay dying... only better. The singer is a black guy and his voice is incredible. Some of the people here might not enjoy this style of music cause it involves screaming, lots of it. But the music is brilliant and the guitar work absolutely something refreshing to me after listening to many of other metalcore bands realising they are all the same...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98FBzM4QoHU End of heartache, one of their most succesful singles

Also try demon hunter, a relatively new metalcore band just slightly different from the other in their style. And they're christians, with christian lyrics and such. But that doesn't mean they are not teh pwners

Stone sour

A comercial type of band but could attract people to some more heavier types of music ( like marijuana :D). The singer and guitarist are from Slipknot but have a somewhat different style than before

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIzDsGyxsQM through the glass, a classy little sing along

Other bands I didn't have the time to write about

Arch enemy- Nemesis
Apocalyptica- Life burns
SOAD- Radio/video
Iron maidern- The Wicker man
Slayer- Reign in blood or angel of death

The Chariot
By far my favorite band out there. They are thoroughly Christian and thoroughly brutal. Josh Scogin is such an amazing lyricist. And when I saw them live, I got goosebumps.

Norma Jean
My Second favorite. Also a christian band. They go hand in hand with the Chariot though, because this is Josh Scogin's old band that he left to start The Chariot. This is the video for what is possibly the best NJ song that there is. I saw them a few weeks ago and it...completed me.

As I Lay Dying
One of the best Metalcore bands out there. Such powerful music and a driving stage presence accompanied with thoughtful emotional lyrics. Tim Lambesis is a lyrical genius.
@ †, Dan Weyandt did guest vocals on As I Lay Dying's latest album.

Underoath
It seems like everyone likes them these days. So I don't expect anyone too be surprised. But if you were a fan in the pre-Chasing Safety days like me, then I applaud you. The old stuff is especially good. Dallas Taylor/Spencer Chamberlain/Aaron Gillespie are really good lyricists. I only like a few of the new songs in terms of lyrics. But I like how the stepped up their sound to more of a hardcore feel. Also a Christian Band.

As Cities Burn
Good emotional  band. I love this song. Everything about it.
"Would you still love me in famine? As when Love began at the harvest?
Or would you gain the whole world? Son, I loved you at your darkest.
What good is the whole world when I promise no tomorrow?
I only promise your tomorrow will never take you past my palm.
What is love without trust?
At my word, would you bring your Isaac?"
Also Christian.

He Is Legend
Fun hardcore band. I've been a fan since the beginning. They are energetic and Schuylar Croom has the best beard ever. Whether they are christian or not is debated. But I don't think they are.

All of these bands are pretty heavy. I love the music that gets me pumped.

Chariot, really liking some of those choices.

I really enjoy my metal, time to promote some of my fave bands with a basic desrip of each!!

Kalmah- Melodic Death Metal (Finnish). Good Songs: Hades, groan of the wind, moon of my nights.
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=kalmah&search=Search

Dragonforce- Power Metal (Fast almost epic and not heavy). Freakin INSANE guitar!! Good Songs: Throught the fire and flames. Revolution Deathsquad, Fury of the Storm, Cry for eternity, Operation ground and pound.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDesqj7HOgA

Equilibrium- Epic Viking Metal (Recently heard, very keyboard orientated, quite serious folkish metal.) Good songs: Tote Heldensagen, Widars Hallen... Haven't heard more yet.. :P

As I Lay Dying- (Christian) Metalcore?, awesome!! Good Songs: Forever, Elegy, 94 Hours, COnfined
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzAXKdNYuUE

Still Remains- (Christian?) metalcore. METALCORE WITH KEYBOARD!! Chilled choruses, awesome scream. Good songs: Stare and wonder, in place of hope, white walls, the worst is yet to come

ROADRUNNER UNITED- Various. A massive colab of over 54 artists signed by roadrunner. AWESOme album!! Good songs: everything

Chimaira- Fast paced angry metal, awesome scream. Good songs: Pure hatred, power trip, implements of destruction... still need to get more.

Bullet for My Valentine- Metalcore. Good songs: most of thier music is awesome, try hand of blood, tears don't fall, 4 words, all these

Tired of typing will add more later....

Chilled

All of the bands listed that fall under this category I discovered through the internet radio station Groove Salad, hosted by SomaFm. Any of you that like chilled music I highly recommend you check it out.

Boards of Canada

A Scottish electronic group consisting of brothers Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin. They produce some of the weirdest and yet at the same time amazingly chilled and trippy/funky music I've heard. I challange anybody who is into their chilled not to like this band. Each of their albums variate, giving of a different genre and sound as you move from one to the next. A few (was limited by the choice on youtube) of my favourite songs are:

Dayvan Cowboy - Guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Wait for the drop at the beginning and watch the video if you want, it's pretty cool : )

Peacock Tail - Beautifully chilled song with all the beats, sounds and rhythms fusing together brilliantly. Absolute Perfection. Unfortunately the youtube video is only 1:50 min long whereas the actual song is 5:24 min.

Roygbiv - A more upbeat song with a steady beat and a happy ending.

There are so many great songs, I can't list them all. Each one is different from the next but still to the taste of those that liked the one before.

Ulrich Schnauss

This is some of the most amazingly chilled, captivating and thought provoking music I have ever listened to. Ninety percent of the time I'm doing photography I'm listening to Ulrich as I find him a great source of creative inspiration. A few (again, was limited by the choice on youtube) of my favourite songs are:

A Strangely Isolated Place - Beautiful.

Clear Day - Just amazing. Takes a while to build up but you'll know when it gets to that point. Makes me want to run around London at an unnaturally fast pace with my arms stretched out wide.

Crap, just looked at the time and remembered I have to work tomorrow so that's it for now. I'll see what people's reaction is to these two artists and if it's positive I might post some more.

Enjoy : )

Since everyone is mainly doing American or other foriegn music, I'm going to do a bunch of English bands (with a few great American ones thrown in here and there).

ENTER SHIKARI - SORRY YOU'RE NOT A WINNER (Take to the Skies)

This band originated from where I currently go to college, nice bit of back-story. Metal + Electronics. 'Nuff said.

Other worthwhile songs / Anything Can Happen In the Next Half Hour / Jonny Sniper

COHEED & CAMBRIA - TEN SPEED (Of God's Blood & Burial) (Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness)

Since Claudio toned down his screechy vocals from the last album, I've come to love the new one. Still a tad too screechy though. Oh, and I want his hair.

Other worthwhile songs / The Suffering, A Favour House Atlantic

NINE INCH NAILS - HURT (The Downward Spiral)

For me, Nine Inch Nails have been one of those bands that you have just always listened to. It's the sort of **** I listen to when I'm down. Nine Inch Nails just always help me remember why I hate everyone again. This specific song probably won't appeal to many, it's not one to listen to for the good beats.I could only find a live version.

Other worthwhile songs / The Hand That Feeds, Right Where It Belongs

MUSE - PLUG IN BABY (Origin of Symmetry)

Plug in baby is probably my favourite song of all time. It's really good, but it's not the greatest song, it's just a personal favourite.

Other worthwhile songs / Hysteria, Space Dementia

PENDULUM - BLOOD SUGAR

Pure Drum & Bass excellence.

Other worthwhile songs / Slam

THE WHO - BABA O'RILEY (Who's Next)

Classic. One of those songs you listen to over and over again and you still end up singing it. Plus Pete Townsend is God.

Other worthwhile songs / My Generation / Won't Get Fooled Again

THE KOOKS - NAIIVE (Inside In/Inside Out)

Wrongly overshadowed by She Moves In Her Own Way, this song was an instant classic in my playlist.

Other worthwhile songs / She Moves In Her Own Way, You Don't Love Me

THE KINKS - YOU REALLY GOT ME (The Kinks)

More classic english rock. This is their most famous song, and I believe also their greatest. Lola comes in a close second though. Christ, youtube really is **** for quality music.

Other worthwhile songs / Lola, Sunny Afternoon

KAISER CHIEFS - I PREDICT A RIOT (Employment)

Yes, living in England does have an influence on the music I listen to, but who cares, the English stuff is the best. This is just another helping of British auditory greatness,

Other worthwhile songs / Ruby, Everyday I Love You Less and Less

THE FEELING - FILL MY LITTLE WORLD (Twelve Stops & Home)

Rather recent, feel good song from an excellent chart topping English band. Most of the album is pretty fun to listen to aswell.

Other worthwhile songs / Sewn, Strange

And while we're on it, I want to arrogantly advertise more great things about what makes Great Britian ... great.

Hugh Laurie.

Who? ... The guy that plays Gregory House from House M.D. Yeah, that guy. No, he's not American, he's just got his accent down to a tee. He's British. Yup, without us you wouldn't have House. ;)

Aaaand how can anyone that isn't a flaming vegetarian not like a Traditional English Breakfast? Look at it for crying out loud.

And now I really have to go to bed. Cya later.

Ahh, somebody else who listens to soma.fm. I usually listen to the Drone Zone myself, it's awesome. Aphex Twin did some ambient stuff, and all of it's really good.
