This is nothing to be overtly concerned about. North Korea is just trying to push itself as a major world force, and power is the way to do that. Kim Jong may seem nuts enough to fire at a country, but I don't think he's that stupid as the country would be leveled flat by other nations if a strike were attempted. He just wants attention. I can't blame him -- he's always trumpeting his country's nuclear power, but the US ignores him for Middle East invasions and whatnot.

yeah, the irony is that the us attacked sadam on the presumption he had WMDs, when he didn't, meanwhile NK's got nukes, waving them around, saying 'what about me?!?!'

Yeah, this pretty much falsifies the war on terrorism.
An actualy threat comes around and the ol' government is just like "Huh? Theres no oil there for us to benefit from, so lets ignore them."

Pretty much. If it were a humanitarian effort as the Iraq invasion and liberation is painted to be, then what about Cuba, a dictatorship just a few miles from the shores of the US?

frogboy: what i meant was, iraq got all the attention when it had nothing, while north korea was practically ignored until recently, when they overtley declared that they had nukes for a long time now.

Except that Cheney and others say that North Korea doesn't actually have nuclear strike capability. All that's followed are test runs for missile launches -- but not nuclear missiles. North Korea for all that's known may not even have the technology to shrink the nuclear bomb to fit inside a warhead. All that's confirmed is that they have been working on plutonium production and whatever Kim Jong announces to the public. The bigger concern is an attack triggering North Korea retaliation, laying waste to South Korea, Japan, and China.

China can do some major damage but North Korea just doesn't have the resources or allies to pull off anything big.

remember, nuclear strike capability is not a necessity for a nuclear attack... people worry about terrorists simply having nukes, not being able to launch them (russia can't even launch its own nukes).

NK is obviously just trying to get attention and piss people off because it can, but; it really has nothing to lose. it has a dying economy, a lot of people are starving, it's pretty much fallen apart. kim doesn't care about his people; he'll high-tail it as soon as he's in danger.

anyway, the missiles are just for show. if you really wanna use nukes, all you need are cargo containers. there's only a 20% chance they'll be checked. you can just send them to major west-coast ports and let them do the exploding personal-like. NK supposedly has 3-6 nukes, so this would be more practical.

actually, the atom bombs weren't as decisive as fire bombing, and fire bombing was easier to pull off too. more people were killed in tokyo by fire bombing than either city hit by an atom bomb. japan was just slated to give in no matter what, and hirohito finally recognized that. the decision to give in was over an invasion of japan, and devistation by general bombing. the bluff that the US had more atom bombs wasn't taken into account as much as would be idealistically appreciated. in context of the time, the atom bomb was justified, but historically it really wasn't.
