Curt's Soldat Scripting Manual
« on: June 27, 2007, 10:56:40 am »
I started to create my own manualish thing for scripting some time ago, and worked on it a little more today, and just wanted to see if anybody wanted to help me out by fixing some incorrent info or adding info or anything... I only have the events, which arn't even done yet, so don't give me any suggestions for the functions and variables yet, unless you think I would not have normally added it. The file is attached.
I don't have Microsoft Word so I created this with WordPad. In case it looks funny or something, try opening it with WordPad. If it still looks funny, then... you offended me. :P

Due to the evil not-allowed-to-upload-this-type thing, I had to save the file as a .doc instead of a .rtf... but uhh... It seems to be exactly the same when opened in WordPad, so again, if it look funny, open it with WordPad.

People will probably read this first so...
THIS IS A WIP... HARDLY ANYTHING IS DONE

I think it would be more valuable (as zyxstand suggested) to put scripting info into the Soldat wiki, not just more random documents and websites where only a few people have access and it isn't updated/accurate.

Maybe I will... once I get the majority done. I don't feel like updating multiple places when I know I'm going to be doing that many times in the future.

The main purpose of this is so people can print it out and do stuff elsewhere away from the computer. :) Or... use on the computer, ir doesn't matter.

So just update it in one place?

Once the scripting information is in the wiki, some of the more experienced web developers here can create sites that automatically take the information from the wiki and put it into a page that is fit for printing

Well, that requires work for something pretty simple and easy to do by hand :)
Plus, I never was good at making thigns on wiki looking good :P it always looks like it was thrown together, whether it was or i took time into trying to make it good :P

Tell ye what - I wanted to make a wiki for this as flab said, but didn't receive too much support.  We can make this the resource-gather location where all sorts of detailed shall be mentioned about scripting.  I have a (small) text file where I jotted down some info.  You could mention small pieces of info about different functions such as:
To heal a player, use a negative damage value in DoDamage.
To spawn boxes you must give the coordinate on the map where the bottom right corner of the box should be.
Powerup boxes stay for 25 seconds - if you KillObject them, the box graphics will still stay until the time is up but you won't be able to pick it up.

These are just a few I put in that .txt file - I hope this time this will turn out to be something.
So how about converting this into a scripting-resource-gather topic?
Can't think of anything original to put here...
