What Should I Do With This? (htf_Arsenal)
« on: June 29, 2007, 08:52:51 pm »
Here is a basic beta of my next map "htf_Arsenal".  I need some advice and suggestions on what should I do with this map.  Feel free to comment on it.

Here is the overview:

Ummmm, "what should I do with it," you ask. There's only one thing.

Finish the goddamned map. We don't need to see that you can make three moderately large, dualtone, uninteresting, mundane, fucking platforms. No one cares about it.

And you want advice? No one can give you real advice, because those three fucking platforms give the viewer absolutely no idea of what the map is like, no idea of the theme or style, and they better not be a reflection of the layout, because three platforms is not a good layout.

Just put it in Rambo_6's Map Scrapyard.

Not sure what you meant to do with it, but change the texture to something multi-textured or better. Add some platforms and some constraints. Add a lot of green vegetations and give it a atmosphere and change the background color.

I know this sounds general, but your map is way too early to be given any advice on.

Maybe I should "**** off", because giving you the advice you asked for is a definite reason to "**** off".

I gave you advice, I made a suggestion, and I felt free to comment on your map. You're the one who asked for it.

Well those platforms look ok for a start. You might get something done with those if you use pretty colours and a good layout (I love junglish colours hehehe).

Otherwise don't scold Wraithlike. He gave advices anyway, and everyone is free to express his opinions the way he wants. Specialist only gets what he deserves actually, as he's been an ass for the past few months. Now he seems to have calmed down a bit, but you know... acting haughty and stuffs never does good in the end. ;D

You should spend at least more than 5 minutes doing a map before asking this question. Feel free to use a timer.

PD: Yes, he had to.

Wraithlike: consider this a verbal warning. As horrible as it may be to you, there was totally no need to also badmouth it off throughout your criticism. You're not scotch-free either, The Specialist; it was unnecessary to retaliate, as well, especially with a one-sentence trollish spam post as the response.

EDIT Plus, you'd be surprised with how effective 3 boulders can be ;)

At least someone has a positive attitude.

I've updated the map with a border and some additional shading.

I think the map is too big; rescale it by 80% or something.

Plus, Keron's sketch offers a much better layout, which in turn offers more dynamic gameplay.

I want the dl link and see it for myself. Maybe even add sceneries to it just to be helpful.

The map isn't that large.  It is best suitable for 4 or 5 per team.  The screenshot makes it larger than it really is.

Also, this is only my 6th map, SirJamesaFord.

Sorry about that. I wasn't saying it was horrible, but I simply beilive that this topic is mostly useless, because the only picture offered was a 5 minutes minimal effort job with no coloring, minimal shading, no scenery, Not even background colors. I don't really care about the warning, but I still believe that all I did was criticize his map, which he should have expected when he asked for people to comment on it.

Also, I realize that really good layouts can be made with a minimal number of platforms, but I had assumed that the level would be platform hopping, and not have a surrounding area. Which just attests to the fact that the initial picture of the map was overly vague.

And, now to comment on the new picture:
First, you should thicken the outer poly-layer, as they single layer is a bit too simple and doesn't look great. You should also make sure that the leftmost platform doesn't have polybugs, because you have a large number of verticies connecting at the same point. You should also do something to fill in the large amount of empty space in the upper left area. And most of all, you should establish some sort of theme for the map.

I want to apologize for that Wraithlike, when I told you to "**** off".  I did expect criticism to my map, but I didn't expect people to cuss and use language in it.  I was already angry about something stupid that happened earlier that day at the U13 servers.  Eitherway, thanks for the comment.

Haha, no worries, I was being a dick, because I was having a few personal problems with my special ladyfriend, which I'd rather not go into. But it was wrong to realease my anger at you. It's actually looking pretty good, but you should take Keron's layout into consideration, because he really knows his stuff.

I might create two versions of this map, with my original layout and then another with Keron's.  I can't decide which one I want.  Also, are they're any ideas of the theme of the map?

Since everything looks so gray so far, why not give it a "construction" theme?  Complete with bulldozers, piles of rocks, support.bmps, and so on and so forth.  Needs alot of scenery to pull it off, as well as some advanced shading, imo.
