What is a good (free) video editing program? I don't need much, mainly just something to split and splice videos.

that forces you to export to crap wmv format that can only be played on Windows. Furthermore anything like Soldat videos made with it turn out horribly because you can't see bullets or read the text.

Does anyone have suggestions for another piece of free software that doesn't force you to use wmv?

Incorrect, Flies. There are options for formats that aren't windows specific. There is also high enough exporting quality to see bullet trails and read text. I used it for all of my Soldat movies and it came out fine.

Also, WMV uploads to YouTube, so it doesn't even matter if it saves as such.

For what he needs, splitting and splicing videos, Windows Movie Maker is the best option.

It can also save as DV-AVI and from there be encoded into other formats. Not ideal, so you're right to complain about the lack of options besides WMV, but for the average end user this isn't really a problem.

It's a free app, and it's not like .wmv is a "problem" because anyone with Windows can read .wmvs. And Youtube happens to convert .wmvs to .flvs really well.

Kindly explain your point because, as far as I can tell, Microsoft forcing users to use a format that is generally supported is not a very big deal at all. Especially when the program in question is free.

And the average end user really does have no problem being bent over and fucked by Microsoft.

If I say "this hard drive is generally supported," I don't mean "it only works on Windows," I mean "it works on various operating systems and manufacturers of computers"

Generally supported could still be used correctly, using your example, "This hard drive is generally supported by most modern motherboards, it uses Serial ATA"

I understand linux or ubuntu or both or whatever you run works for you. Windows works for a lot of people, with lots of software, shareware and freeware support. and direct x

Ermm, I would suggest Sony Vegas, but it costs money. I think you can get a free trial though, 30 days.

Trials usually suck because they cut up the video, I suggest using a free program from a reliable company.

There are tons of free/open video formats that work on Windows and every other operating system. MS created WMV specifically so that people start using it and it can't get used on any other OS. It is a stupid and anti-competitive gesture.

As for "not supportive of other operating systems," WMV can be played on Linux. I'm sure there's a Linux WMV codec out there somewhere, too.

Yeah, they play horribly and unreliably because MS keeps changing the spec of WMV, so OSS developers have to keep reverse-engineering the format.

To be quite honest, there aren't any that are both good and free. I have kept an eye out for about two years, and tried many a free program, and most suck.

Flies is right, there are far better video editing programs out there than bullshit WMM.

Just get off your lazy arses and look on download.com or majorgeeks.com, you'll soon find something decent.
