I have a rotting computer with Windows 3.0 somewhere in my attic.  I believe two of the few programs currently (and permanently) on it are the old Prodigy client and SimTower.

Haven't used it in years, though.  I doubt it even works.

We had a Mac from around 1994, and we got our first PC in late 1995 or 1996. We threw it away a few months ago when we moved, though.

Get a CD-ROM drive from some of your friends, install some Linux, insert more memory and overclock it if possible in any way. I don't know about your friends, but at least I can get few CD-ROM drives within few hours when needed and so on.

I believe that after(if you are able to) you attach more RAM, Linux will be SO much better to use. As the comp may be so slow that you won't be able to play any games in Windows, it won't really matter that you can not really play in Linux either.

If Linux is no option for you, installing more RAM will help quite alot anyway. Used 64MB stick should be somewhere $2-$10 on eBay. (I don't really know, based on average prices in Finnish auction (shop?, auction or auction shop? :p) It may be that you got no free memory slots. Before buying, you need to find out if the comp has SDRAM or EDORAM, is it SIMM or DIMM.

The point of this thread was not to help you, but damn.. Just a little advice. :P

To the topic, Ihad similar computer few years ago, except that it actually had working CD-ROM and Floppy drive. It was Hewlett Packard Brio BA 400, and to be honest, it sucked. :p

Currently I have an old rig made out of recycled parts I have been collecting in past few months. Living and kickign. Having 350MHz CPU and 256MB of RAM, and 5GB Hard Disk Drive. (Linux runs well on it! ;))
When I am at my mum, I need to use her OLD computer. Pentium Pro 166 (Overclocked to 233MHz tho), 64MB of RAM and S3 Trio with 2MB of VRAM with Windows XP. Can't play anything, except soem emulator stuff. Opening firefox takes like one minute, and loading main page of Google takes more than 3 seconds. Not so enjoyable to use. :(

How old is "too young" ?

btw the computer that is the suckiest in the world is the first computer ever made. It could only store 4 kilobytes of information.

I don't know.  Probably 16MB or something like that.  It's all guesswork at this point...

Lol. My computer can't be updated. You can't install ram in it. If i do which i have, it just goes 2 times slower. Plus it can't detect any CD-ROM drive and floppy drive. Plus my friends don't have spare parts. Thanks though. I guess my computer is Unupdateable. I made that word up.

I have an old laptop that has a 4MB video chip, probably a little more than 64MB ram, and a PIII 700Mhz.  The thing constantly overheats, and is slow as hell.  Takes 1 minute to open up My Documents.  Considering that it got messed up and was showing blue screens at every startup, we had to wipe the thing.  And now, it can only display about 4 colours, cause we can't get new video drivers for it cause the thing is so old.  It runs 2000 NT Version.

Stopped using it though.

Now I run a Dual Core 2.8 Ghz, Radeon X1900GT, 1 GB Ram.  Just to run it in   ;D :P

Imo you cant call slow PC sucky. Think about for example an old Pentium 166, it was fucking fast back at then when it was new. A sucky computer is one that, for example, gives blue screens, has lots of viruses, and in general doesn't work well.

My old computer was a Pentium 233, 64mb ram and a 2 gb harddrive, and Win2000. And due to my S3 Virge DX/GX all Soldat graphics showed up to 50% too, yay. And once a mate installed a program called Deep Freeze (just google it) I could start it up properly without a bluescreen about every 4th time.

I need to set that up one again some day. ;)

I've got several extremely old pc's in my closet from the early nineties. I sort of collect old pc's, I snag them from dumpsters and curbs and usually install minimal versions of linux on them. The oldest has got an Intel 486 SX (says copyright 1989, but I doubt that's the manufacure date), few megs of ram (thats right, MEGS), a 106.9 meg hard drive, and a clunky 5 1/4 inch floppy drive. No optical drive of any kind, not even a 3 1/2 floppy drive.

As for being an extremely bad computer, it isn't. It is reliable, just extremely minimalistic.

Also, I'm planning on sometime in the near future to gather 4 old 486's and set them up in a Linux Cluster.

There is no such thing as "slow" PC really, they don't get any slower, but programs get more greed for better hardware.

...and overclock it if possible in any way.

I hope you're not talking about direct hardware modification.  That's a lot more trouble than its worth, IMO.
