Lil' Port Town
« on: July 17, 2007, 05:14:02 pm »
Here, I was experimenting with buildings and I came up with this. I think it's pretty cool. I made the buildings like actual buildings. When you walk into them, the only places where you can see yourself in them are through the windows. Makes it looks more realistic. I added that boat and water just to make it seem port-like.

This is just the beginning of who knows what. I might just leave this as another one of my "experiments" with buildings and towns. I might turn it into something though...

Textures look really good, but there's many places where you can tell where the polys are and places on the buildings where the textures don't match up, other than that looks pretty good =D

Also - since when does water seep into concrete? :P although that effect does look pretty cool

Ah, with the water "in" the concrete, you have to use your imagination. If this was 3D, the water would be going around the concrete which is sticking out into the water slightly ;). I know it's stretching it a bit, but I like how it looks for now.

The textures with the buildings n' all, you've got to have a few rough spots in the walls of the buildings. Also, in the left building, there's a sideways hole in the wall where I forgot to put a window so that might look odd...

In case I didn't quite clarify this, you can go into the buildings.

Double post, but the reason is because I just came back from an awesome trip across America...and I've been gone for about 3 weeks.

One question and a comment is all I ask. Would anyone like me to finish this? I could add it to the map scrapyard if anyone felt the urge to complete this sapling of a map.

Yea blacksheep, you might not want to use the average poly color feature, it looks cool but destroys the look of the water.

Actually I reccomend making the polys for cement white, for the traditional port look.

The mixture between PhotoTextures (house, trees) and "Cartoony" (lamps, tank, crates) is "Not Pretty".
Btw. the name on the Boat is Mirrored ;)

Keep in mind that those buildings will serve as excellent camping spots; they even hide the flag! But for decoration, they do serve well.

Flag? What flag? I might not even have flags.

Of course the buildings will be excelent camping spots...I didn't make them to avoid thus. Gotta be extra careful then I guess :-\.

Meh...don't complain by saying that I'm against critism, cause I ain't. Thanks for your input forumers. Much appreciated ;)

I'm in agreement with Psycho on this one. The buildings blend far too well with the dock itself...maybe try what daz was getting at by using an actually water scenery instead of a poly that stretches into water? It kind of seems strange how the water fades into about the middle of that poly because that way it sorta appears like the water is surrounding the dock so to speak...which when it fades to nothing sorta feels like it just ends itself entirely.

Contrast between buildings and dock would be complete win.

I see what you are saying about the water...you mean, just make the dock area look more like a dock?

I don't know about CTF, but this map looks like it would be an awesome INF and TDM map.  It's a very nice job, I hope it gets added to many of the R/S servers, I think it would be more fun than a CS/DE map!

Hmm, not really as a cs/de map.

Yeah, even in my 1.0 version, I need to make adjustments. Right now, I'm pretty busy with school as always, and I'm attempting to remake some of my older maps which isn't coming out too good. Also, I'm trying to work on a mod...but that isn't working too good either. Well, in a new version, I'll need to contrast the buildings from the ground, and do some adjusting. I think I'll also make a DM version as well as a small, almost arena type map.

And, the water is made up of just a scenery...the scenery overlaps the polygons. but yes...that needs improvement too :-\. I'll do a 2.0 version if/when I get the chance.
