Well...yes. But part of being a Christian (not required, but good to do) is to bring glory to God. Sinning all you want doesn't help that. Christianity is not supposed to be a "get out of jail free" card, but instead the start of a close relationship with God.

Doesn't every religious person believe that theirs is the only real religion? I do admit, that it is impossible to determine which is the true religion, especially because many religions are very similar (Christianity and Islam, for example).

Unfortunately, it's this sort of thing that's sort of shaky for me. I know I'm not as strong a Christian as I'd like, but I doubt that many people my age are. I definitely haven't studied the Bible as much as I should, so I'm not very qualified at answering these things.

Ideally, Christians should be be knowledgeable in scripture (It says this in 2 Timothy, I think...like I said, I don't know as much of this as I should), doers of good works, and kind and gentle to everyone. No one should pass judgment on others (Matthew 7:1), and this is why I hate it when Christians tell everyone that they're going to hell. It may be true, but it's not our place to condemn anyone ("Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"), and it sure doesn't make people want to become Christians.

I firmly believe that if all Christians acted as the Bible taught, in a moral and upright way, never passing judgment, but always helping others, and doing everything for the glory of God, that many, many people would want to become Christians. Unfortunately, we're doing a terrible job of representing our God.

Maybe all of that didn't answer your question, but at least you know where I stand on all of this.

I've always thought that. It's one thing that really bothers me.

Humility is a good quality every Christian should exercise.

You know... this is the first topic on religion I've seen that didn't turn into just atheists yelling at christians and the other way around. So first of all, thanks for not ruining my joy on the forums

But alt-0134... I remember seeing "I'm not a christian" in your signature... Was that just a joke or did you change your mind?

I have a theory..

I always hear that 'God' is all-forgiving, and that if you are truly sorry for your sins, you will be absolved.

I am an atheist. I personally cannot understand why so many people worship something that has no physical state, based on their upbringing, and stories that they have been told by other people. According to most religions, when my body and brain stop functioning, some part of me that physically does not exist will go to hell, or the equivalent of said religion.

The theory I have is this: I am perfectly happy to 'sin' (within the boundires of local law) because I do not believe any punishment, from a religion, will ensue when I die. But if Christianity is real, I'd go to hell. I'd be pretty angry at myself for being a sinner, and I can honestly say I would be truly sorry for my sins, because I would not want to go to hell. So surely, God would forgive me, and I'd be let into heaven?

My twin brother, mum and dad (mostly my mum) is evanjelical christian. Yet I'm not. I just havn't seen a reason why Christainity is more 'real' than all the other religions. Once my mum had a discussion (almost an argument) to my grandad, trying to convert him. I could see my grandfather's point all the way, to everything my mum said he came back with sense and integrity. So I respect him alot.

My religion is Morality with a touch of agnosticism.

What do you think about it that most of the people god created will go to hell and suffer there for an eternity? I mean, if "God" is all-knowing, why did he create humanity, knowing that it will begin and end in pain and torment? Why is he such a total asshole? Why did he never answer my prayers? Why did he think it was necessary to kill six million totally innocent Jews? Why did a good man die from cancer when a serial rapist never got caught?

I'd rather go to hell than spend my life serving someone like that.

no offense but you guys need to get organized. there are christians who look at the bible and see it as guidlines for a happy life. (although me as an atheist beleive i am smart enough to know whats wrong and right) these people are fine. Then u have the nazis who take the bible as saying that judas betrayed jesus for money hense: greedy jew. Even thoughj in the gospel of peter it says he did it to help jesus. so my question is:

why are there so many contradicting things in the bible?

One of my favourite stories from the bible:

"A man who was traveling through the land of the Benjamites (one of the tribes of Israel) with his concubine and was staying at an old man's house when a gang of men came to the house and demanded that the man turn himself over to the mob so they could rape him. The old man tried to dissuade them from raping his guest by offering the mob his own virgin daughter and the other man's concubine instead. The crowd decides to take the man's concubine after which they proceed to rape and abuse her all night long. When dawn comes they release her and she drags herself back to the old man's house, dying on the front step. The man comes out and sees her laying on the doorstep and tells her "Get up, let's get going," but she is dead. So the man carries her dead body back home and cuts her up into 12 pieces and then sends those pieces all across the country just to show how horribly he had been treated while he was a guest of the Benjaminites (Judges 19:16-29)."

you know, having read the bible myself, i wounder just how sweet would it be to meet jesus, can you form a hypothesis on how sweet it would be, are there forms of measurements/units/beliefs of how sweet it would be to hang with jesus, but my real question:

Alot of people who turn to god are sick, homeless, or just stupid. yet (agreeing with red dawn) why is the bible so hard to understand? wouldn't that draw stupid and homeless people away? and what is the meaning of life? and is oporah god?

i think what your trying to say is that these people all turn to the bible for hope but the bible can sometimes be anything but. such passages in the bible portray ideas that would be harmfull to ourselves or others. examples:

"If your right eye causes you pain, pluck it out and throw it away" -Matthew.5:27
(yeah kids take your eyes out bible said so!)
"i say onto you, do not resist one who is evil." -Matthew.5:39
(yeah kids obey me muhahahahahahahahahha!)
"Give to him who begs from you, and do not refuse him who would borrow from you" -Matthew.5:42
(give me all your money god said so!)
"Everyone who has looked at a woman lustfuly hase already committed adultery" Matthew 5:28
(this is where the eye one comes in handy)
"Thou shalt not lie with mankind as thou lies with womankind, it is abomination" -Lev 18:22
(so its sinfull either way? i cant lie with man and i cant lust for woman.....wait....)

I wouldn't say that. You don't have to be sick, homeless or stupid to want some spiritual guidance in life.

I know quite a few Christians, and while I don't agree with them, they certainly aren't "sick, homeless or just stupid".

its mainly how children are raised. i mean ive seen pictures of a 5 year old kid holding a swastika at a nazi rally. its so sad because hell grow up a white supremesist and not even know why. As christians do you even know exactly WHY you are christians? Unless you converted to christianity its probobly only because you were born into it.

Many people have studied the bible very carefully and found none. Any you have are a misinterpretation of the bible
