What god wants...
« on: July 20, 2007, 07:01:46 pm »
After reading Vijcht's post about Bush saying that God told him to invade Iraq i couldnt help but to post the following lyrics...(yes its yet another song that noone likes but me) "What god wants part 2" by Roger Waters

What God wants God gets God help us all
God wants dollars
God wants cents
God wants pounds shillings and pence
God wants guilders
God wants kroner
God wants Swiss francs
God wants French francs
Oui il veut des francs francais
God wants escudos
God wants pesetas
Don't send lira
God don't want small potatoes
God wants small towns
God wants pain
God wants clean up rock campaigns
God wants widows
God wants solution
God wants TV
God wants contributions
What God wants God gets God help us all
God wants silver
God wants gold
God wants his secret
Never to be told
God wants gigolos
God wants giraffes
God wants politics
God wants a good laugh
What God wants God gets God help us all
God wants friendship
God wants fame
God wants credit
God wants blame
God wants poverty
God wants wealth
God wants insurance
God wants to cover himself
What God wants God gets God help us all
                  -END-

"Waters was not criticizing God, but rather those who claim that God supports whatever their particular cause happens to be "

Thats sort of a disclaimer in case you dont get that hes not talking about god.  Killer fucking song though.

And if there is no room upon the hill
And if your head explodes with dark forebodings too
Ill see you on the dark side of the moon

God wants you to make monetary pledges of faith to sweaty men with well-greased pompadours.

Well if this isn't two people feeling up their egos I don't know what is...

It must be dozens of people in a church simultaneously agreeing that their god is the best god.

...also, you hate people who use religion to justify whatever they want and you know it.  Stop acting like you're offended.

He didnt mean it like that.  When he says "God wants this God wants that God wants widows God wants whatever" he wasnt meaning that God wanted that.  Hes saying that people are using Gods name in order to get what THEY want.  Roger waters is a religious man just as you are Gram and he got really upset when he saw all this on tv.  He got so upset that he decided to write an album based (not entirely) on that subject.  In fact when he says What God Wants God gets God help us all hes really saying What "God" wants "god" gets God help us all.  Notice the quotes.  The first two times there are quotes.  implying that it isnt really god saying that.  The last there arent any quotes...God help us all....Hes pleading with god to help us all from people taking advantage of his name in order to obtain thier selfish needs.  I thought that christians would really like this song.

Ehh sorry, I admit I got a little pissy, just struck me at annoying at the wrong time. I didn't mean to insult you guys. I went out to walmart to clear my head(Its weird I know) and now I think I can talk this out. This is bad on both ends to me, I know Bush used some religious talk to gain support but still its a bit annoying the guy won't just say he dislikes Bush.. he has to attack him through God. Eh, you guys may not get it.

That song was written in 1992 and wasnt really referring to bush... i just meant that something vijcht said about bush reminded me of the lyrics.
"God wants clean up rock campaigns"... thats what really started the whole song... People using gods name in order to get people to clean up rock music or whatever.

What did you mean by "the guy won't just say he dislikes Bush.. he has to attack him through God"
Were you referring to the author?  Because if so like i said earlier he wasnt even aware of Bush.  And i assure you Waters wasnt attacking anyone through god.  He was using their own words against them and pleading with god to help us all.  Waters just has his own way of saying things.

I know.  You...goblin (or something to that effect...a mischievous mystical creature, let's say).

If you're talking about the song in those last few sentences, then you're a bit off the mark.  It's possible he was talking about Bush Sr. (especially since the members of Pink Floyd were very politically aware), but I doubt it.

If you all ever get the chance to hear this song do it... its much better with the music.  When the girls are singing "What God wants God get God help us all"  its absolutely amazing... gives me chills.

EDIT: Pink Floyd werent politically aware... Roger Waters was.  The rest of the band were against doing the concept albums such as "The Wall" and my personal fave "The Final Cut".  Roger Waters was the brain behind most of the lyrics.
