Karma System
« on: July 20, 2007, 07:40:33 pm »
We need a karma system. What if we just leave the smite out of the karma sytem. So instead people can only applaud you. If they don't want to applaud you, you don't get smited. If your a bad person you will probably just stay at 0 or some number that is really low. Plus all the same rules should apply, like you can only appauld a user after a day. SO this way we don't have to worry about noobs getting smited. Also we could have something that tells people how many people you have appauled. Anyone agree with me? or would you smite me for this idea?

How can there be good without evil?

That's the bad thing about karma, it assumes too much.

We had one for a while, and while I think it was a good idea I have some ideas to modify it and make it better.  I suspect it'll never come back, but if it does it'll be something like smite/applaud but with limits of +/- 5 or 10 or 25 or something.

Putting away the karma system is the greatest victory towards evil we've had in a looooong time. However, if you were to reinstate it, I'd suggest something like this.. A person should only be smitable if he has +1(or more) positive karma. In this way, no one could ever go below 0, thus making no one... sad.. And we could still applaud those who actually deserve it.

But I still don't support it.

I'd like the old system back, complete with smite. Don't try to leave smite out just 'cause you know you'll be smote.

Ofcourse you would. you had a positive karma rate, many didn't. people got smited for the cause of it. People actually started smiting people for having low karma.. :P

Nah, the system was a good attempt gone wrong.

That would just shift the scale up a bit. People who were 'hated' would be at 0 constantly. What's the difference there?

..., but if it does it'll be something like smite/applaud but with limits of +/- 5 or 10 or 25 or something.

Sounds a lot better in my opinion.

people who are hated would just be at a constant -25 then.  What's the difference between my idea and Flies'?

Obviously.

Anyhow, most people were really happy about karma being put down. Why would we really want it back? I mean. I had like +15 karma, and I don't even want it back..

The biggest reason that people didn't like karma, was because they didn't know what they were getting smited for. What about a form to pop up when you smite/applaud someone, that asks for a reason for the karmic action? the reciever would get a pm telling them they've been karma'd and the reason.

Although, it could be abused with people saying, "Because you are a douchebag" and reasons like that, That is the real only downside.

The karma system was a bad thing, a very bad thing, a very very bad thing. 1/10 lounge posts were people complaining about it.

Don't ever bring it back.

There's a mod for SMF somewhere that does just that. Every time you smite or applaud someone, you're forced to put a reason.
