The Karma system was tried and failed. Even with a cap in either direction, I fail to see how things would be different now. Bad idea.

The biggest reason that people didn't like karma, was because they didn't know what they were getting smited for. What about a form to pop up when you smite/applaud someone, that asks for a reason for the karmic action? the reciever would get a pm telling them they've been karma'd and the reason.

Although, it could be abused with people saying, "Because you are a douchebag" and reasons like that, That is the real only downside.
There's a mod for SMF somewhere that does just that. Every time you smite or applaud someone, you're forced to put a reason.
There is?!

Why didn't/don't we use that?!

I was normally in the low +'s, and I hate karma because people would just be able to annominously smite you, not even giving a reason. If it's for a very petty reason they shouldn't do it anyway, and if its for a good reason they should post in the relivant thread for some constructive debate. Yes it was fun to smite people and most of us were left with a redundant 'smite reflex' just after karma was removed; but overall karma corrupts the community.

As karma can be given for the most petty and ignorant of reasons, the karma score assumes so much from just a number. That member has a low score; it could be because he's an immature troll that diserved it, or it could be because some people didn't like his anime avatar, or he used a weapon that some people thought was a spraying/point'n'click/lame weapon.

Maybe there can be a enable/ disable karma for people who don't like it? That way people won't have to see it if they don't want to.

Mate, you were one of the those for whom the karmasystem worked intentionally. You misbehaved and got punished accordingly. Well, not accordingly, 'cause had I been in charge you would've probably been strapped nude to a block of dry ice and gangraped repeatedly by lusty black homies, but that's just me.
However, you got your bad karma..

And for your idea thunderpants, sorry, but I don't see the point. Karma was made so that newcomers could see who knew a lot about things around here, and who behaved either good or bad(and how good/bad). With your idea, everyone with bad karma would just turn it off, so we'd really be nowhere. And as we saw last time, nice people would still be smited to hell for no appearent reason. Sorry.

^ The premise of the karma system was a good one, but the results were not expected.

I do not wish to have it back, although it did make me feel better about myself whenever someone applauded me, you couldn't even see which post it was for, and there was no way to put a comment. Even if we were forced to comment, it would also be abused: Just type in a bunch of nonsense and voila - instant smiting without consequences.

We realistically cannot make any changes to the system without making it even more unbalanced than it already was.

Yeah, and even if we decided to make some kind of punishment for carelessly smiting,, no one would wanna go throughh all those comments. It would just be depressing, timeconsuming slavery.

I like the idea of karma being at least 0. And no smite button.
What if karma gradually returned down to 0? Like every 24 hours, people lose a point of karma.
You should only be able to do karma once every 12 hours; period. Globally, not per person.

I agree. If we're ever to bring karma back, we gotta make sure we do it for the right reasons. It was hard enough to keep clean last time, so we definitely do not need to bring it up as some game, you get what I'm going at?

The one good thing about karma I'd say, as brought up above me by my esteemed co-forumer SDFilm, is that it actually makes you think about how you post. At least it did so for me, and for others too appearently. But that would probably be it..

Make postcounts visible in peoples profiles.

Make karma to be visible only for the user.
Make so that you can not applaud people without quote of the reply. When you applaud, there has to be quote which tells why was the used applauded or a quote to a post which earned the user an applaud.

Problems solved? ;)

For once I agree with Fluffy. Clawbug, I really admire your attempt to perfectionize the karma issue, but truthfully told, and that's the real issue, soldatforumers are far from perfect, and so they will always find a way to screw things up. I guess you could say they are were almost like real people in that way.. ;)

But yeah, it simplly won't work. If you make something into a competition, no matter how pure the intentions may be, people will just fuck it up bigtime. And believe me, they will turn it into a competition.

Sorry man. I would love to have it back if it worked as well, but I really don't think it will.
