Players to Servers ratio
« on: July 27, 2007, 09:28:10 am »
When I request servers, I always see a crap load of games up and running that have nobody in them. Also, when I see servers with people on them, the server is always an oddball server with mods or some third party type of play.

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but what I wouldn't give to see less useless servers and more usefull servers! All i want is more than 2 choices out of 200 when I want to play a traditional game of CtF or Deathmatch!

And also, this ratio. I see 400 servers and 900 players. That means that were getting 2 1/2 people to a server! Lets try to reduce the amount of unused servers... if we do, we might get this game to the point where there are more options open to the public.

Yeah, I always thought it's way too easy to start a server. The requirements should be more restrict. This way we would avoid this "hyper-offer" of servers that people start with crappy home connections.

So, how would we do that? Delete inactive servers? I'm pretty sure a lot of angry server owners out there won't be happy.

Or should there be a certain server limit in the lobby at one time?

I agree with you that it's sometimes difficult to find a regular CTF public on which to play. I don't play on publics very often, but the last few times that I've tried, I've ended up seeing mostly only servers with weapon modifications, R/S, climbing maps, racing maps, or some other such thing, and sometimes I can't find a normal CTF server at all.

Thankfully Fractured's CTF public often has some players in it, and if it doesn't, join and wait for a few minutes and usually people will show up.

And also, this ratio. I see 400 servers and 900 players. That means that were getting 2 1/2 people to a server! Lets try to reduce the amount of unused servers... if we do, we might get this game to the point where there are more options open to the public.

I don't understand how reducing the number of servers will increase the number of choices for the players.

It wouldn't increase the players options, it would make it so there are more players in each server.

I don't know why the server owners would get mad if people don't go to their server anyhow.

when you request servers,(with empty servers not included) click the ping button and the lowest ping would come up..and those 9999 pings would be at the bottom of the list.....

I would just like to see more games that aren't completely filled, empty, or unofficial.

When I used to run FunkyDM on my server comp and home connection, I had more players than I got now with server hosted by real hosting company. Now the server runs with 100/100MBit connection, and is in southern Finland(Better pings for central european players).

Back then there was no regular DM servers, so I had to make my own, now there are at least 3 other FInnish DM servers, 2 swedish and loads of German, so my server stays pretty empty. >_>

I still go it to it whenever I can, Clawbug, but I'm in North America with a lame internet connection - my ping is like 170 or more. ;_;

What I really miss is a way to filter out realistic and weapon modded servers for instance. It's especially bad now that realistic servers don't have the (WM) in front of the name anymore, making them easily mistaken for propper servers.

No, realistic is bull****

Take it back! R/S is ftw.
Heres an idea, restrict server hosting to those who registered the game. It gets more to register and cuts down on servers, if not just a little right?

Amen.

Anyway, the solution here is not less servers. It's not like each person goes into a server by him or herself and plays alone. Most people crowd into a few select servers. The majority of the servers are empty, and removing them wouldn't have any effect at all.

Just join a regular server and wait a few minutes for others to start joining. It will happen if you're patient.
