Fall damage; A question.
« on: September 17, 2007, 09:31:25 pm »
This question applies to realistic servers, mainly Trenchwar servers because in TW servers you get no jets.
Okay imagine for a second, Now i know it's hard for some of you because a mixture of soldat and heavy metal music may have rotted your brains but stay with me here, You are playing trenchwar, you are owning everybody, you get a double kill then a tripple then a multikill x2 and then suddenly you get blown up 50 feet into the air, Remember now Tw's got no jets enabled, What do you do?

I mean to say if you get blown into the air, usually you are screwed because you die as soon as you hit the ground, but i want to know if it's possible to survive a fall.

By like rolling when you hit the ground or crouching or backflipping.
Does anybody know a sure fire way to at least survive a fall even if it's by like 1%?

Suggestions:
*Roll on impact
*crouch until impact
*backflip exactly on impact
... What do you think would help?
Lol, internets.

Rolling doesn't work, and apparently can't be implemented due to some programming eccentricity -- I and some others have suggested it before.

Crouching isn't possible in midair, and wouldn't work anyway for the same reason as rolling.

I seriously doubt the backflip would work, but I guess there's a miniscule chance there.

I doubt there's anything at all you can do to save yourself unless you have a minigun or some form of explosive weapon, which would include grenades. Using an explosion would be a tricky proposition, of course, particularly in realistic mode -- it'd be a long shot, but possible.

Well, a late backflip COULD save you, but you would have to be ready for the sudden explosion which sends you into the air.

So basically you're screwed.
Well, that's just peachy.

Rolling works if you land on slopes.

You can fire a weapon when you get close to landing, to try and slow yourself down enough to survive; landing on a slope helps. Shotgun is most useful for this, due to the amount of force it moves you with.

But most of the time it's better to continue shooting the enemy, and take your death with dignity, and kill as many as you can before you land.

yeah, backflip will save you, but as Lobasuu said, you should be ready with a blackflip, and then im kinda sure you will get killed by your enemies first :D

I dont see how backflipping could prevent you from dieing in this case.

Well, if you, by sheer dumb luck, were still holding down the 'up' button after being in midair after a recent jump AND somewhere in that same jump being blasted by a grenade that somehow didn't kill you, then you, if you hadn't let it go while frantically shooting in midair, might be able you hit jet for a minor speed reduction and possibly not die. In other words, you're screwed and should just concentrate on shooting.

No. If you don't like the minor inconvenience, don't play. It's not like it happens every 3 seconds.

Bottom line: Explosion launching + realistic mode + no jets = Yer screwed.
To sum up my point: We had a multipage debate about toilet padding. (Putting TP in the water so you don't get splashed.)
And we still don't know if dead guys can keep a stiffy.

A properly timed grenade could, if you were the right distance from explosion, save you. Shooting should hypothetically slow you down, but the downward acceleration is greater than what most guns output, so you would probably accelerate to same speed after each shot.

In a somewhat related matter, I occasionally die when a grenade goes off above me. Even with a polygon between myself and the grenade, the explosion launches me downwards and I die, as if from fall damage. Has anyone else experienced this, or is it just a glitch on my end?
