Impossible to answer...

There are so many games both past and present that could be labeled that... Zelda: Ocarina of Time was astounding back in the days of the 64... Some geek is going to say Halo.

Umm.. I just don't know... GTA: San Andreas is so huge and fun, it's definately a contender...

Greatest for what reasons? Popularity? Fun? Graphics? Replayability? Story? Freedom? Realism? Innovation?

You're being far too broad to get a good answer.  However, I'll answer based on longevity.  If a game continues to be played for years and years, it's very likely that the game has many of the aforementioned features.

That said, my top three would have to be Nethack, Starcraft, and Tetris.
Gamer_2k4

Only anime shows I've felt any interest in over the years are Pokemon (original TV series) and various hentai.
so clearly jgrp is a goddamn anime connoisseur. his opinion might as well be law here.

Well im back from cutting the Grass just to see what you guys said and im suprised to see that alot of you are not saying the same gamesbut to be More Specific what i mean by greatest is a game that has change the gaming it self
Ex. supersamsh was the first in mybooks to have a outstanding 4 player brawl. You jump right into it without all the settings. To me if there was o supersmash nintendo wouldnt be were they are today (sales wise). Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the only game that would make want to go get a Wii.

But dont mind me Continue Continue with the games.

Heard of everything else accept SWAT 4. No Disrespect on your choice im just saying never heard of it.

I love SWAT4 because its game play is a FPS but with more depth and tactics that you can use. At least in Rainbow Six: Raven Shield, the terrorists did sometimes surrender but there wasn't much point to it as the HQ doesn't care if you just shoot them in the back of the head once they did. SWAT4 has a much greater emphasis on 'playing by the book'. At first I was put off because it sounded like 'more bureaucracy, less shooting', but it actually adds more tension and depth to the game. You could go in and shoot everyone, or you can try and get more points by trying to arrest them. You shout "Police! Get down on the ground now!!" They might surrender, or they might quick draw you or just run for it. You can end it all by choosing real guns, or stun/disorient them with gas or less-than-lethal weapons. Being a bad-ass cop by continually shouting at them and shining your torch in their face is worth it alone :P

Agree'd 100%ly. The online mode of SWAT 4 isn't that great, but it's a fucking load of fun playing it SP.

I still have to stick with Sim City 3000 though.

Super Smash Brothers Melee is the best Ever.

I am undefeated. No one has beaten me in it, not even in the Peoria Tournament I went to.
I have a trophy with the big SSB logo on it =D

And I am good with all characters except Young Link... Damn you young link.

Quake 2. That was the first FPS I played, ever. I got my ass handed to me. I went back and played it later, afer playing doom and the like, and got through it. It is the best game Evar.
