old pentioners and gaming
« on: July 08, 2006, 06:36:42 am »
Hi i'm knot, and i've been thinking.....

About old people and games.. :Q

Ok, as it is right now, none of the "old people " you'd find in a home would know the first thing about computers.. But hey, some day our generation will be those old people, and guess what, we love our games. Now my theory is, well yeah games will change a lot, possibly to the extent that they require some physical fitness to play them, but that's not the point. If they stayed the same, then theoretically, the old pentioners would be the hardcore gamers. (they'd have the most time on their hands).. They'd really have nothing else to do. Assuming they don't go too senile or develope some sort of alzheimer's desease, they'd be gaming-fit.

I really do beleive that in the future, clan pages and shiat willl have 70 year olds in the members section ;Q

What do you think?

Interesting theory, but your reaction time, eyesight and hearing diminish as you grow older, plus you're likely to develop stiff joints and possibly arthritis. All these combined will make gaming uncomfortable for a pensioner.

Additionally, as you grow old your skin gets thinner and more fragile and constantly rubbing it around whilst using mouse and keyboard would hurt.

A number of old people play games, including back during the 8-bit days and earlier. Eyesight and hearing loss are corrected with medical treatment and other aides, the same with joint pain. As medical technology advances, these become less and less of a factor in aging. Playing a game doesn't require much effort as it is -- you sit in a chair and really just need enough to support the weight of a controller and to move your fingers enough to press a button. Of course, advanced controls in fighters

Additionally, as you grow old your skin gets thinner and more fragile and constantly rubbing it around whilst using mouse and keyboard would hurt.

That is funny.

I'm not sure about very old people, but my grandad (in his mid-late 60's I think) plays Microsoft Flight Simulator, Combat Flight Simulator 1 and 3 (ww2) and Micorsoft Train (giggle  ;D) Simulator. I also know a Vietnam vet (aged 50 somthing) that plays Blitzkrieg (a great ww2 RTS).

Age isn't going to stop someone who enjoys playing a game.

That is funny.

No it's not, an old lady I knew once had a hip operation and during the operation the surgeons accidently tore some skin on her leg just by gripping it.

I can bet that I will be one such person. That's if I don't kill myself before then. Old and alone, playing computer games. I'll probably still be on IRC if it exists.

Oh, God, I dread the day that will happen.

Btw, it would probably be Counter-Strike: Source V. 24567421.1337.

When my reflexes slow too much to play action games I'll spend every waking hour on Civilization.  (by then they'll probably be up to like #8 or 9)   ;)

That's because she's old and decrepit. If you eat right and stay healthy, then you're body won't show those "signs" of aging. One personal anecdote isn't enough to go by. :) It's all in how you take care of yourself. I do believe this century's old people will be a step above any other not only due to the constant advances in health care and fitness awareness, but also since technology offers more ways to keep one's mind active far more than generations' activities, including video games and even the Internet.

RTS's are too fast, you'll have to start playing Timed Stratagy games.
