The leap!
« on: June 08, 2006, 12:28:41 pm »
I noticed this one in a old thread at the old place, so ill post it here and hear what you think...  ;)

My idea is that when you douple tapp the left or right movement key, the player will make a leap forwards over fair distance, sorta like superman, and then when he reach the ground, he will roll and then be back up on his feet....

D is the right movement key, I believe  ::)
And it seems like a good idea to liven up the game a bit.

Bad idea, people will constantly use it just for moving and it will be hard to hit people while they are doing it

Hmm, would be rather fun ability to see in the battlefield but I don't think would be that useful. However it might add some spice to climbing maps, heh.

Bgretydews, I believe it wouldn't be too hard to hit people even if they were doing that continuously.
Oh la la.

I think it would, the leap would need to be pretty fast to make it look even a little realistic and then it would be hard to hit people and make it faster for peopel to get around

It could make for some nice dodging moves. I was reluctant with the backflip at first, but it proved to be useful in certain situations, specifically escaping with the flag and dodging enemy barreters. I could see this as being a compliment to that move. It'd definitely make things more interesting.

I can see this becoming a pain when people start mastering and abusing it.

I think in order to prevent any abuse or overuse, it shouldn't be beneficial to use it while running ordinarily. For example, after the roll, you should be slowed down considerably while you regain your regular stance, giving you no speed bonus in the long run. This way, it's only used in certain circumstances to dodge or whatnot and not constantly while running.

No offense, but it sounds like a waste...we can just roll when we hit the ground, or roll off a ledge.  It's kinda like a dive.

IT would greatly discourage snipers i would imagine, since once you mastered it you could easily time your leaps to dodge the barrett
Your acting like your having a duel and your opponent gets a pistol and you get a spork.
Isn't that pretty much what it is? I dunno wtf a spork is, I suppose it's way weaker than the pistol since you compared that to this.

Dead to Rights style! I didn't know that made a Dead to Rights II? I loved the first one though.

I couldn't find a pic of the backwards jump. That was the best :) I think that if it is done right then it would help the game.

I always wanted this type of dodge movement to be implemented, but we already have the backflip, so this becomes rather useless.

bja888: I'd say its more like Max Payne.

I think its a cool idea, but I'd hate it if it was a double tap of the A or D keys :/ double tapping is awkward to use - I never use the double tap dodges in UT, its easier just to move and jump.

Make it so everytime you leap you consume a certain amount of your jet fuel, like 1/3 or 1/4 of it, then this will be great.

I'd agree if the move couldn't basically already be done with a quick leap and prone jetting. The backflip is nice because it gives something not possible otherwise -- a quick way to reverse movement. Forward movement, including a OP's leaping tuck-and-roll, is already possible, making it unnecessary. The only dodge style movement that would be nice and help improve the dynamics of the game would be the ability to jet in other directions instead of just upward.
