I use Paint.NET, but was thinking about converting to Linux.  Is GIMP cross-platform?

Yes, GIMP is cross platform and runs natively on Linux. The same with Inkscape.

No, do not cross to linux. Paint.net is a fine example of what many other programs are starting to be. Starting as small, training applications for programmers, they are getting bigger and better with every release. Paint.net is one of the best image editing programs (tho it hasn't got so much features as photoshop, but can be expanded with easy to install plugins.

I use paint.net for photos and gimp for pixel/gif animations.

If you are used to photoshop paint.net is really easy to get used to.

I have a number of plug ins for it. they have some good results.

Are you running linux on a calculator? Because that is the only way I can think either of these will not work.

Also, Illustrator is more for brochures and such.  I don't like it as much as Photoshop.

I got my photoshop via a method of questionable legality, so I won't talk about it.

I don't see why the gimp wouldn't work on your Linux. Are you sure you installed it right?

If you're on Windows, you'll need the GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment (for GIMP).

Windows Gimp comes with GTK already packaged in the installer.

Run this under ubuntu / debian linux to get gimp..
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gimp
