Warning message for necro-posting.
« on: August 26, 2007, 10:35:16 am »
Hi,

I was thinking of a small script/addon for the forums that'd show a message when a user is posting a reaction on a topic which is older than let's say two weeks. It'd fetch the date of the last post in that topic and if the diffrence is greater than two weeks, it'd show a message after clicking the "Post message" button. Something like the message you get when someone posted a message while you were still typing a message.
Could save some mod/admin work in the Lounge for example and isn't too hard to make or find I think.

Yeah, would definately do the trick. It also needs a couple of microsoft-ish OK nag screens...

Maybe because it isn't that common. Sometimes someone do it but it's intentional (at least I think so. How the fuck to you go back 5+ pages without thinking of how old topics are).

Baah, I am completely against warning people for necroposting as long as they respond appropriately... whatever.

I'd rather see something like that in the Quick Reply box, like the Warning!  This thread is currently locked.  Only mods and admins can post, etc. message.

That would be ok on paper but I doubt people will look at the screen long enough to read it.

What I would really like to see is automated locking of really old topics (>2-3 months); I actually saw someone revive a thread that not only was a year and 3 months old, but was about something that didn't even exist anymore so there was no reason to bump it.

How about auto-ban if you bump it and it's more than 5 months old?  :)

What? I'm sorry, but that is incredibly unnecessary. Any ban for a revival is, actually.

Yeah, the ban is a bit too drastic. What if someone makes a mistak? :P

I think the auto-locking is a bit too drastic too. In the old SoldatForums, I used to bump my topics when I made an update to them. This way I didn't have to create a seperate topic each time I made an important update so all the info would be stored in one place.

Alright, so this idea has some support, does it have any chance of etin lementd?

Maybe auto-locking combined with the rights of the author of the thread to open it again for the updates and stuff.

That's a pretty good idea, but I doubt if that is easy to script :)

Actually, you can already lock and unlock your own threads, I believe...

Nope, only mods and admins can lock/unlock a topic.

I distinctly remember being able to close your own topics. I saw the "lock/unlock" button in one of the threads I created before.

Yeah, I know what you meant, but I've never seen any close or lock links inside my own topics. If it's possible, I think you can lock/delete your topic when there is no reaction yet, but I might be wrong there.
