fps shrinking o.o
« on: August 29, 2007, 03:17:58 pm »
hi.
okay, problem: the first time i join soldat and a server, ive got 50-60 fps(whether winamp is opened or not).
so.
after leaving this server and joining a new one, my fps shrink to 35-45 fps! after this, they shrink to 5-15.. you got the idea.
but: when i reopen soldat, everything is fine(and begins from new on). and: when im on a selfhosted server(start game..), the fps are continuously at 50-60.
so.. what to do? help please :(
thanks, bye

Might still be some memory issues, but I'm not sure of that.
What maps were you playing?

Its prolly because of map.
If your playing climb which has loads of sceneries and shading on it may make great FPS lag on weaker computers.
And do you use xFire while playing?

Geekier than you!

Umm... Sorry for asking this question but what happens if your Fps is low? Does it slow you down?

No, it makes the game 'lag' its the Frames Per Seconds displayed on your screen, human eye can see about 27fps, if it gets below 27 you really see the screen flash which is very irritating.

I figured it out myself that xfire was the source of the problem, so I always shut it down before playing soldat.

Yes, xfire has caused a lot of problems in 1.4.2. I don't use it during game-play anymore. It increases my fps and lags my computer.

human eye can see about 27fps
120fps*

He was more talking about the lower fps limit to see percieved motion, although it's not entirely accurate.

Statistically, the flicker fusion threshold is the rate that 50% of people in a group would percieve as continuous; this is about 16hz/fps. Film runs at 24 fps, while television, depending on where you live, runs at 25 or 30 fps. Virtually everyone will see continuous motion at this framerate, but they will percieve a brightness pulsation, hence why in film there is a shutter that causes the frame to flash on and off(which is also used to mask frame pulldown, so you don't see a sliding image) which causes a flicker of 48 hz, or 72 hz on some, while television systems use interlacing to achieve an effective framerate of 50 or 60 fps.

Games are a slightly different story, because not only does your framerate tend to vary, but your monitor is operating at a fixed refresh rate, which results in the display of a series of fixed images, which can make it more noticable even at higher framerates.

</slightly offtopic>

Moral of the thread: xFire will cause problems.
