What's the point?
« on: September 06, 2007, 09:06:41 pm »
Why do math teacher's give kids around 100 easy math equations? It pisses me off. The average person in my class will be like "**** this I'm doing this at home" and then start talking to friends.

With repetition comes memory, and ultimately mastery.

You can't do one equation one or two times and then have it down forever. What's gonna happen when you take your finals and you forget how to solve the equations from first quarter?

Also, most kids are, unfortunately, stupid or incompetent.

Well it's either to lodge it into your brain or to give you busy work at home to make your life miserable. It's especially frustrating to me because I can't remember a damn thing, ever. If it weren't for h/w posted online or my friends who actually pay attention, I would never get any homework done.

And that really sucks ass. I don't want to be considered a failure because I can't remember to do questions #1-75 on page 112.

They still do it at this retarded school for 9th-10th grade. I've seen some 9th-graders struggle with addition and multiplication. :\

Well, at least they can shell out a living digging ditches, collecting trash, loading trucks, constructing roofs, and fighting in ridiculous wars, etc.

That way we don't have to.

All of my teachers realize that alot of homework is a burdensome thing for both them and the students.  So each teacher only gives us a small assignment or two every day, totaling up to a reasonable amount of homework.  And since my school schedule is divided into A-day/B-days, my homework for each class is due every other day, giving me two days to work on it.  Although, most of my classmates procrastinate and do their homework at the very last minute, like on their ride to school or even in class.

Who the hell does homework?

Guys who don't feel like dropping out of high school, college, not having enough money, getting evicted from your apartment or home, being forced to live out on the street like an homeless man, missing showers and soap for long perious and is constantly starving.

I'll tell you what's worse is when a teacher gives you a worksheet and tells you, "don't do it, just hang on to it."

Pre-Calculus rapes my face  D:

30-40 questions every night, and all of them are really HARD.

The only reason I pass with a 70 in there is cause I study like every day, at lunch, on break, all the time.  Cause really, I'm dumb as hell.

math problems are menial tasks. They are mostly just review and should not be allowed to be forced upon children, because they probably already know that shit.

Being an engineer in training, I cannot help but notice that many of you don't like math right now. I wasn't big on it either. However, as you move on to the more advanced subjects, you'll find that the higher you go in math, the LESS work you're going to do. This holds true for anything; Even advanced classes in highschool can actually equalize in less work.

The reason behind why teachers are pushing you to do these questions is because you have not reached a "Mathematical Maturity"  in which you're comfortable with manipulating symbolic terms. After you've reached Calculus, you'll find that the work is significantly less then the normal work you're used to now.

I love maths and after a year of doing it constantly with loads of practice on a facets of this subject, i have come from 112th out of 183 students to being 1st and I'm in the top school of my state. I have to say that hard work indeed pays off and i started off hating maths.
Maths starts off being, as thunderpantz said, 'menial tasks' but after tonnes of experience of every type of question it's as easy as 1+1=2.

So you think they should make all questions, lessons, and homework adapted to your knowledge? Just making this question shows your idiocy and how you fail to think just a little to find the whole meaning of school.

Yes. The sole purpose of school is to torture the mind until you are a perfect slave.

No, but the main point was that it discourages kids to work in class, and whatever left is homework.
Then they encounter a problem which they can't solve, and there's no one to help.

I don't hate Math just so you all know :) I never did homework last year....but this year I'll try a little.
