Public vs Private
« on: September 10, 2007, 05:13:58 pm »
People talk about how they like/dislike publics and what-not but what servers do they play on? I'm no noob to soldat I am just confused. What are some good private(if thats the right word) servers? Also, if they are private how do so many people find them?

Some good public servers for North America include U13 and Fractured (not sure about EU or elsewhere).

There used to be some "public-private" servers a few years ago. They were basically just passworded servers and the password was only given to certain (ie "good") players, mainly in the clan community, though with some exceptions. The only one that stands out in my mind now was blan's (who else remembers that?!) server.

Eventually gathers took the place of these public-private servers, and that's probably what most people mean today when they say private servers, although they may be referring to clan servers and the like as well.

There are actually many gathers on QuakeNet. There's the North American gather (#sna.gather), the original/EU gather (#soldat.gather), several gathers for specific countries (#soldat.gather.pl, #soldat.gather.cz, others probably as well), and also gathers for other game types and game modes, such as the realistic gather channel (#lrs). There was a realistic survival one at one point, but I don't know if it still exists.

They're pretty well known for the most part and anybody can join them, so they're not really private in that sense, but they sure do attract a different crowd than the public servers for the most part.

Private servers are servers that are passworded. That's why they're private;D
Usually reserved for clan training or for a small soldat community located in your hood for example.
I spent most of my soldat gaming in privates. We run a weapon mod & custom map.
It's also nice to play with the same players all the time because it makes u do some incredible moves and its harder
to play against someone who knows what will your next move be.

If you don't run your own servers if u're lucky u get invited to one;D
It's all about honor.
Be fair.
Return the flag to killed ff carrier after respawn.
Let him score he/she deserves it.
Accept that u are not the best like I did.
Allways say hi to a friendly player when he/she greets u.

Kill only for fun.

I, for one, actually don't mind the publics at all. Well, I only recently made my comeback to soldat, but back in my very active days, I thought it was pretty nice to visit the pubs, since there's such a variety in people playing there. In privates it's always the same ol' pros playing, which frankly can be a little boring.
I fucking miss all you cunts!

I tend to stick to Gathers 98% of the time, because when I play public I only play INF and theres never anything going. :(

U13 is great for NA. Fracs is usually filled with idiots and its a last choice for me.

Euros have selfkill and tba(think thats a euro server)

Myself I usually stick to U13 ctf and dm, every now and then wandering to Leo's servers when chakra won't come to U13.

Might as well take time to recruit another person to HTF

IP: forums.soldat.pl , Port: 30029

Thats the info for the U13 HTF server, get some buddies to join you in there. Toumaz is gonna be running it soon I hear so no more messed up sceneries cause by my lack of servers.

Private servers might be servers where a group of friends are playing on it and they want no one else to join. So they password it. Me and my friends created a private server so we can just play with eachother. There usually fun especially with your friends.

This I've done many times, although it's usually an inf against a never ending hail of Boogiemans.

I have tried Gathers before, I didn't really like the formalities involved with it. I find much more fun in playing u13, TBA, and Fractured servers...

Well IMO the problem with private servers that if you constantly play against ppl that you know, sooner or later it will be boring since you know how and what will they do. On public servers, sure you can find some noobies, but also there are some talented players too.

#soldat.gather. That place is the sanctuary of that strange but common breed of Soldat player that has played Soldat for years yet doesn't visit or know about the Sodat Forums; which means that they are totally oblivious to forum-only players such as me. So it's pretty unwelcomming unless you already have a '+' title on your name.

As dramatised:

SD: Hi fellow Soldat vets, I've came here for a better challenge without joining a clan. So lets get stated!
#soldat.gather: Sorry, do I know you? I've never seen you before.
SD: well I've only been a Soldat Forums member for 3 years..
Gather: Oh, the Forums? You mean that place where inferior public players go for help and non-IRC clanning?
SD:.....
Gather: well I've never heard of an "SDMovie", so you have to go in the noob servers where you belong until we deem you worthy of a '+' badge.
SD: [ego fit] Don't you know who I am? I'm SDFilm! Member since 1.2.1, wannabe Soldat comic artist, the camouflaged Minimier! [/ego fit]
Gather: whatever, you need a + badge to show how 1337 you are, noob.

*eghem* anyway...

I think Demonic said that I'd have to ask someone there to 'test' me to get a + badge. But even if I do get a '+', I'll probably still play in public servers anyway because I love it's almost instant speed when starting or ending a game.

Try #sna.gather. Its not as active but there are always people in there you can chat to. + at the start of your name in #soldat.gather means you can play "Gather +" which is "anti n00b". However, there are still loads of good players who play normal gathers. Also, seeing as people who are + rarely play + gathers, they play normal ones most of the time :Q

^Indeed. Even I play non + gathers more nowadays, simply because it fills faster, and I just want to blow some shit up.

As for the current status of public/private servers, xurich's post pretty much summed everything up.

I haven't played in public for nearly 2.5 years now, so I can't say anything about today's public scene. Private server, mmm.. Gathers are simply boring, ususally the same retards playing all day long. I think clanwars are the only enjoyable games around nowadays, tho they can get boring if I'm the only one spraying.

Gathers would be so much more awesome if players didn't get the option to /pause the game themselves.
I have a Mac so I can't play with you guys no more :(
(psst MM make a Mac version)

I agree. I haven't played a gather for months that hasn't involved at least one pause, and it's usually far more than one. I have a feeling that people wouldn't feel so comfortable going AFK if they knew that they couldn't pause the game, and chances are that it'd cut down on the problem a lot.

I like pubs for personal reasons. I'm just not into the game enough to even want to get into a community, download like IRC, vent, xfire, whatever, get to know people, all that stuff. I play for fun, not for winning some tournament or having others think I'm good. I just play, and I like it that way. Playing privates is ok for some people, its just not my style.

That's the only reason why I dislike #sna.gather

Dont worry, you'll come around :D

I play publics most of the time, as you can see, usually in the !elite rooms, but sometimes i feel like playing with a multitude of guns so i go to a clans public server. Recently got into trenchwar and that is some fun stuff right there.
