HUGE Lag problem

hi
just recently done reformatting (to no avail) due to a really annoying lag problem.
recently i'm having odd trouble playing soldat online;

once i join a server it's all good, steady ping (around the 100 +\-) and everything's smooth.
but after about 10 seconds, everything goes ape****. HUGE lag spikes starting to hit me, my ping gets jumpy, reaches 1000 ms, and basically i can't play for ****.

this is pretty weird since it's not only in soldat, it's on other mp games aswell.
anything i play online is fine for the first seconds, and after that it's all laggy and gay. i tried reformatting, tried changing my bandwith speed, cleaned my pc from anything harmfull (hell i even deleted winrar and winamp), nothing seem to help.

also tried playing with all kinds of cable bandwith tweaking programs (cablenut etc), but it deals with all kinds of parameters i don't have the slightest clue what their meaning is.

it's kinda like after a few seconds the game client(s) somehow "overload" my bandwith.

can anyone help me getting back to online gaming again? thanks in advance!

u need to open ur firewalls, this can be found in the antivirus or in windows and in ur modem (if u have broadband)http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/2wire/2701HG-T/Soldat.htm here in this page u find a way to remove the firewall for soldat thats have to work, and the other two opcions are pretty easy  c  ya

Get rid of xFire.  That caused massive lag spikes for me.

thanks for the replies.

i don't have xFire, so that rules it out.
and my ports for each game are always open. i even try disabling the firewall sometimes to make sure there will be no blocked ports, but that doesn't change anything aswell.
