Soldat's System Requirements Are Getting Higher
« on: October 07, 2007, 08:30:13 am »
Lately since 1.4, Soldat has been running slower for me with each version released.  Nothing on my computer has changed and I'm sure I don't have a virus.  To make sure I was right, I downloaded copies of older versions, installed them, and play-tested them.  Turns out in 1.2.1, I can run 20 players at a time without even having it glitch, now, with 1.4.2 I can't even run 10 players or it'll crash.  Has anyone else experienced this problem and is its requirements becoming higher, or is it just me?

Video Card: 4MB ****
Processor: 866MHz
RAM: 256MB

I used to be able to run Soldat smoothly no matter how many people there were.

Now I get huge FPS spikes when there are like 8 people.

After 1.2 the system requirements have risen. I have a hard time believing that the minimum is:
333mhz processor - Will have to struggle but if you can bare with its performance it can work.
32 MB RAM  - A 64 MB has hard time keeping up with a 533MHz processor so this needs to be set higher as 32 MB will not run it that I know of..

This probably isn't a matter of Soldat requiring more, but there being a bug in Soldat that causes it to have problems in certain situations.

The maps are beginning to get larger, I can see how you might lose framerate if your computer really sucked balls.

Actually, I dont think its soldat but rather these 1000 polygon maps and 500 scenery maps that are causing framerate to lower massively.

On old maps like Viet/Kampf/Laos I get 75 FPS, on Trenchwar maps or the current B2b I get 55-60 FPS.

I think that's a common problem, there has been a lot of complaints about it.  Probably a server bug.

This probably isn't a matter of Soldat requiring more, but there being a bug in Soldat that causes it to have problems in certain situations.

Its one bug I can't deal with.  If MM is aware of it, I hope he'll have a chance to fix it.

On old maps like Viet/Kampf/Laos I get 75 FPS, on Trenchwar maps or the current B2b I get 55-60 FPS.

I think its the complete opposite.  For the original default maps, they tend to run fast and I can play with a decent amount of players.  For high quality maps that have a lot of details, run extremely slow.

i think soldat is getting heavier...on my old machine (600mhz, 128 ram, tnt2) i used to get a decent 60 fps with 1.3.1....the last versio that ran was 1.4.1 with 40-50 fps (shocking)....the newest version (1.4.2) didnt even start....got a bunch of errors and then soldat crashed (i believe it was because of 98SE and not the hardware though :D)...i tried all kinds of stuff, none worked  :'(

anyways i got a new machine and i get a steady 200fps with all bots and bigfalls map....during normal gameplay fps goes around 300-400....making soldat the best performing game i have  :P

it still freezes and crashes at times with no error message....so i have no idea what causes it.

Though I don't get the random crashes, I do agree that Soldat has been running the best it has in a long time for me, and though my computer isn't a hunk of trash or anything like that, I have been able to notice the difference.

It is getting heavier for 2 reasons. First is the custom maps are really graphically intensive, that's not my fault. Second is the font rendering change in 1.4, it's a bit slower. But hey the world progresses. Does anybody still play Soldat with a machine before 2002?

I played soldat on my two PCs

1999
Pentium III 450MMX
786 SDRAM (133)
ATI Radeon 9000PRO (128MB)

(1.3.1 - 1.4.1)
nice graphics but couldn't play with more than 8 players

2004 Sony Desktop PC
Pentium IV 2.8
512 RAM
SIS integrated graphics 650 series (32MB)   <----!!!!!!!!

(1.4.1 - 1.4.2)
graphics are lower but game works much faster, played with 20+ and worked fine. If there is a lag it's usually not my fault.

i used to play soldat 1.4.1 with non-upgraded fujitsu siemens T-bird with 600mhz, 128 ram, riva tnt2...running the infamous win98SE....its like a plane without wings, like a bottle with round bottom....that OS crashes from minor errors, thought it still is the best to play old games on like worms world party. That comp was bought in -99 i quess, i bought it used from my friend few years after that. Recently i have upgraded its ram from 128 to 256 and bought a new hard drive....i still cant play soldat 1.4.2 on it for some reason, its probably directX or something (tnt2 supports only up to 6.0 if i remember right). I would love to get soldat working on it again...my new compu is located at school dormitory and they have blocked all ports needed for online gaming.

Battlefield 2 sucks anyway. Why would you want to play it?

It doesnt "suck". However most of the games are about personal frags and tk for vehicles. but there are good servers too.

i personally like ET:quake wars better.
