Notify Flag Captures?

I know quite a few of us play TWs, and I have a suggestion:

Why not make a field such as Echo_Captures in soldat.ini in the server, which is:
If value is 0, then the players are not notified (i.e. the message doesn't show), and if the value is 1 (default), message is shown.

I'm asking this because it's hard enough to get to the enemy base in TW maps without having them all (magically?) notified when you capture the flag, and subsequently jumping on your back.

I don't know about you guys, but that doesn't seem very realistic to me.

Yeah, it's quite annoying when after all that sneaking you get uncovered with whole way back to base.

No way, lol - that would make removing the notification pointless, as any decent player will notice the appearance of a flag icon in the window corner.

Maybe the flag icon could work for the capturer's team only, but maybe that wouldn't be fair.

F12. But, the X over the flag in the indicator should stay, even though there isn't a big red or blue lettered "RED/BLUE FLAG CAPTURED!". It wouldn't attract as much attention. Also, they might think that it simply bugged away or was shot off its perch.

Awesome idea.

In TW though, capping is like winning a battle, and getting closer to winning a war.


The flag indicator should stay, but the message should be optional.

F11. That's why we use tactics, strategy, and brain to evacuate the flag. That's why you need to have an entrance and exit plan. That's why getting the flag is only half the battle.

Also by taking out the message, you're deducting a huge communication aspect of Soldat.

Third, what about the "Flag Returned" message? What about the flag being captured in HTF?

Besides, in almost every game I've played where there's CTF - there is always a notification when the flag is stolen or returned.

For inexperienced players, or on pub servers, Echo_Captures could be set to 1.

Flag returned will have to be scrapped too.

In CTF, there's a notification, but what about TW? It's realistic mode, and like I said before, notifications aren't very realistic.

Without the Flag Captured message, there would be some serious gaps of information and bad cases of miscommunication. It makes everything confusing. I can give you a demonstration if you'd like.

So in pubs, Echo_Captures can be set to 1. What about a public TW?

Finally, TW is only a tiny fraction of the actual CTF. Keep in mind TW is subgamemode like climbing or dodgeball.

And I'd like to mention something about tacking on optional server additions. The CTF lobby is packed with a diverse range of servers. Hexer, DB, Climbing, TW, Knife Only, R/S, WM. Already, people are dispersed among these subgamemodes. Not only that, certain default gamemodes are harshly neglected (HTF, INF, PM, etc). Can you see how adding even more options isn't going to work?

And why won't it work? It's very simple to implement, and since the field will be set to 1 by default, it's only those who actually want to play with the most realistic experience who will change it to 0.

And besides, even if the flag's taken or not, your team players will have to go to the other side anyway, either to return the flag or to capture the enemy flag - the communication thing isn't a big deal.
This will only make escaping with the enemy flag easier.

About the communication thing, I was referring to the cases of the flag being captured, not all communication in general.

Also, it has to be a server option, why would any player willingly switch it off when he knows the others would have it on?

its very unlikely to be implented and i must say im happy with it. you could however do some custom scripting to at least remove the message really fast :) all drawtext overwrites the current drawtext, so you could make a '.' show for 0.1 second if someone captures the flag, this should clear the flag-message.

That will still be distracting enough to let the player know something's happened...
