Why Soldat?
« on: May 26, 2008, 04:44:31 am »
What makes soldat so good?

Answer that.

I think that it is so good because it updates constantly (1.5.0), so it suits the new computers, but it can be run on even dumps of computers. It also is the only 2D shooter worth playing (That I have seen). What's more: It's free. All of that, for free! Only a few (Although, rather cool) features are only $9 away.
One more thing: It's moddable, with easy-to-use bitmaps and PNG's. What more could you want in life. It's great for me as my computer is a bomb shell and soldat was a god-send as it is the only (awesome) game that works.

Anyway, your thoughts?

Okay, to be perfectly honest:

1. Free (no need to pay, but you can pay for extras)
2. Online
3. Updates constantly, and nicely
4. Forums - I can ask stuff. But more importantly, about the weapon balance.
5. I don't find it that repetitive.
6. In terms of variety, it's not bad at all for a 2D game. For 3D, my expectations are way higher.
7. It's a shooting game.
8. You won't get killed too fast generally.

And I think number 4 is beginning to fade away, I think I'd probably shut up in future.

Yes I'm extremely picky, but I can accept Soldat well.

Let's not forget its simplicity. You can pretty much just pick it up and go, although it goes without saying that mastery takes practice.

What I like
+) Free
+) Mostly friendly community
+) Fast
+) Violent as hell
+) Simple
+) Awesome game-modes
+) Plenty of sub-game modes
+) Incredibly unique to the gaming world
+) /mute features (Soon to have /mute all, YAY!!)

What I don't like
-) Clan gaming gets too serious and spoils a lot of the fun
-) CTF seems to be the central part of the game.. when it really should be DeathMatch (And it seems only "noobs" play deathmatch)
-) bollocksloads of bugs
-) Sometimes difficult to stay alive for long, unless beholding the title of Pwnz0r
-) Most sub game-modes are hosted in USA.. not good for Aus players
-) "Cheap" moments (spawn campers.. like me :D )

Player since late 2007

Lol. "Most friendly community" I guess your not thinking about ingame :D Allmost everyone grow horns there.

I think the fact that there's very few players that's extremely good in public's. Not like CS or anything were people devote they'r life to it.
I like the fact that its so easely modded.

At least not as fast as CS... that's way too fast already. That's one reason why I don't play Realistic, and also for recoil.

This has been discussed before, though that's good. It's nice to revisit the reason we like this game so much. I like it for all of the above reasons plus:

I grew up on 2d gaming, I was there when the Atari 2600 was the shizz. Platformers were the most dominant form of games in the 80's to the early 90's - on the popular consoles anyway. I remember having to walk 7 miles barefoot through 5 feet of snow - uphill bothways to my friends house and back when I wanted to play Super Mario Bros. 3. Uh.. anyway, I've always liked platformers and starting with Wolfenstein and Doom and since then, I've also gotten into FPS shooters. Soldat is that perfect balance between that old school platformer and modern FPS with the 2d plus realistic physics element. I think most gamers that play Soldat are also fans of both genres. I do have to say, when growing up, among my favorite platformers were games like Contra. If you could jump AND shoot - it was gold.

There is also one element that you just don't get in an FPS, and that is nailing someone with a nade, rocket or bullet and watching their gory bits launch and splatter all over the place behind them. In an FPS, you can get gory, but it's always the head on view. It also gives the game a tad bit of humor, when you see someones bloody ragdoll corpse fly toward you and splat at your feet - from a good ways a way.

Soldat have uniqe gameplay, any 3d shooter dont have this uniqe,  brutal and playable style :)
IMO soldat is better than CS, COD..... and others 3d shooters.

Clan gaming in soldat is like throwing a party with only lemonade and everyone has to leave at 10 in comparison to "real" games like Team Fortress 2 or Battlefield 2142 or any other game.

Soldat have uniqe gameplay, any 3d shooter dont have this uniqe,  brutal and playable style :)
IMO soldat is better than CS, COD..... and others 3d shooters.
Because ofcourse all 3d shooter games are the same as CS and COD, and if there's any other game then ofcourse you've played it and thought "well hey this sucks, soldat's way better".

1. Better than most 3D shooters. (I'm looking at you soldier front)
2. Decent weapon balance.
3. Runs smoothly on my not-made-for-gaming computer.
4. Modable.
5. People who pay don't gain all these insane in-game advantages like other games that make it completely unfair on free users.
6. Lag not even noticable unless you ping like 300+ (in other words, not much lag)
7. Decent community. There is always whining in every game, but the community is actually somewhat mature here.
8. Lots of variety (the game never gets old).
9. FREE.

Originally I downloaded it because I had dial up and it was the only thing small enough to download (4 kb/s does not cut it). Now that I got DSL and have experienced 3D gaming, I realize this is way better than a lot of 3D ones.
